Accepting the risk of being perceived as anachronistic AF: When I need money for a "bigger" acquisition, I save for it. It's like making all of the installment payments in advance of the purchase.

Go from Irish pub to Irish pub, hoping to find a Leprechaun at the bottom of a pint to ask it which side of the rainbow I should go to for digging.
Very poor results so far.

Selling the existing stuff (ebay or elsewhere) makes room for the new (perhaps larger) acquisition. In the meantime, friends and neighbors that stop over wonder if we are moving out but are too polite to ask and I like watching them squirm. Additionally, the stuff that gets sold presumably gets a second life which makes me feel all 'green' inside. At the end of it all, there is only one big thing (or collection of things) that I will have to get rid of later, making for less work during the subsequent, inevitable, even larger acquisition(s). I think I need a larger opening to my basement..., maybe I should move out to the barn... .

A solution is nothing more than a clearly stated problem...

Other: Try to sell the previous, smaller acquisition, then save up for the bigger acquisition.

Sigh. It's been an expensive year. Last fall my 18 year-old dishwasher died, so I bought a replacement. $. In the spring, my venerable oil-burning furnace was condemned, so I made the change to gas and had a gas furnace installed in July. $$$$$$$$$$. In September, my 24 year-old fridge died, so I bought a replacement. $$. Last weekend, my 21 year-old hot water heater died; a replacement is coming this afternoon -- fortunately, that's covered because I rent the unit.
Of course, this poll talks about 'acquisitions' like it's a third red sports car .. I need these things to get by, especially hot water. Ever tried washing dishes with a kettle of boiling water and cold from the taps? It's pretty tricky. And 'showering' yesterday was quite entertaining -- never realized how much I appreciated having a quick hot shower to get myself started in the morning.
But I digress .. back to work, everyone! :)

I bet the replacements won't last as long as your originals!
I've heard that from a couple of folks. It's a little frustrating to think that with all of the scientific advances we still can't make an appliance that lasts 20-30 years. Then again, when the technician came to the house yesterday to look at the hot water heater, he checked the age and said "Replacement." right away. They're not going to spend any time repairing a 20+ year-old unit -- and that's fair. Presumably they can do a pile of recycling on the old unit.

Publish a book about using Perl in a very niche area, take the small proceeds, buy food and water, start another book with a tiny bit wider audience while protecting your writing pad with an umbrella, rinse, repeat until we're at Perl 9, then acquire the world?

Mention to SWMBO that I'm thinking of said large acquisition so that she can convince me that I don't actually need it. If that doesn't work, I let younger daughter get wind of it as she is much louder in her objections. If neither of them convince me to drop the idea then I start saving up.
