Nostalgic

I caught myself staring at the screen, looking at my own homenode id.

"Wow, 1350.. I'm getting old in here", suddenly I found that I was thinking of node numbers in the same way that you might look at distant cousin that you haven't seen since you were a kid. Appreciation of how one came to be, growing up. Nostalgic. I doubt that Perl Monks has hit its full-mature-self yet, but it sure has come a long way...

Do you remember the days:

When a good post was awarded 10 votes?
When there was no #perlmonks (or trout)?
When btrott and chromatic were scribes?
When node ids had 4 digits?
When there were no user monk pics in rotation?
When the chatterbox was usually empty?
When vroom actually had time enough to post answers?
When neshura posted her 1st pic?
When polls got less than 100 votes total?
When there was no voting/expirience system?
When you could remember all of the monks by their handles?
When perlmonks was a habit and not an addiction?

(the above are not sorted in any particular chronological order, well, sorta)

how about these: When mt2k was called maleteen2000 When the Chatterbox used to blank out every hour When you could keep up with the Newest Nodes When 20 other users was substantial company When the site was constantly crashing and hanging on the old server When mt2k was around, causing a stir (update: i won't say i'm surprised, but he's back)	[reply]

Humm, I admit I do miss mt2k sometimes. Here are a few of his lines that I miss: <mt2k> It is a cheap, lynx/telnet machine <mt2k> is ls -l not usable under Unix Type: L8? mt2k has just finished making a block commenting program for debugging <mt2k> K, merlyn uses functions that don't even exist mt2k wanders through a world of undefined subroutines; all alone <mt2k> Are \r's allowed in a perl script (On a very strict server) #!/home/bbq/bin/perl # Trust no1! Well, I have to say that I have begun to feel similarly, I haven't been here as long as you have, but I have felt the changes since I first came here. Then I step back and say, "But PerlMonks is pretty damn good, anyway." Zenon Zabinski \| zdog \| zdog7@hotmail.com P.S. My biggest fear is that one day I will log on and none of the original people are still here. And that is what I have already begun to see somewhat. :-( Update: Here are some more: When merlyn was a saint... When all my posts fit on one page... When Saints in our Book was ordered by number of writeups... (I don't think I was around for this, and if I am not mistaken...) When you didn't have to be a monk to put images on your home node... Yeah... I think about this from time to time. I havn't been here as long as some people (node 9135 is my home) but I do remember posting things in the chatterbox like, "Wow 17 people are logged in" and having a short (3 min) conversation about that and then the box would fall silent again. Now the Monastery only gets below 17 users around dinner time and again around 3 am. -Adam Here's another one: Remember when home nodes just had names on them. No buttons, no pictures, no poetry? Now look at them... poker games, random node buttons, chromatic feeders, and evil logouts.	[reply]

I was thinking about this last night on my ride home in fact. I was thinking that The site doesn't show an error 70% of the time The quality of many of the answers seem to be improving overall. It seems like people take more time in what they write. Maybe all the attacks on poor code being posted as answers combined with the general raise in clue level of the PerlMonks community (well, the regulars at least) has actually begun to make this a viable resource. The first comment shows that vroom really does keep on working on the site - and it shows. :-) But I think you phrased the cause of the general rise in clue level poorly. Rather than "attack", "constructive criticism". The difference is not always obvious to the casual bystander, but it is significant. The first indicates that you want to drive out people who want to be helpful but have not (yet) learned enough to give really good advice. The second shows that you want to help people get to the point where good intentions can truly translate into good deeds. Based on private conversations with you, I believe that you really do try for the second. (Even if you do get understandably frustrated over some issues.)	[reply]
