Well, yes.... but my trophy Wife, child-bride, SWMBO is not named Hilda, nor are her lists that onerous.

And, remember, one of the joys of retirement is the fact that it gives one leave to be a "grumpy old man" and plenty (well, maybe not "plenty") of time to go the "what...when...where" route."

Well, not quite 'shoulder to shoulder' .. we sit in pods that hold five people, in an open concept office. No one, all the way up to the CEO and CFO, has an office -- we all sit in pods, and it works -- it means you can go up and ask someone a question without having to go through the formality of knocking on a door and then opening it.

Of course, we use E-Mail and MSN as well, but sometimes you need some face time with someone for a thorough discussion or explanation. It's not for everyone, but I like it, a lot.

I've worked in a semi-private office, a pod, and a cube. Just before Bear, Stearns spontaneously combusted, they had us working on long tables, 15 programmers at a table with nothing but a PC in fron of us, and a rollable three-drawer cabinet between us.

Another row was parallel to ours (with a programmer immediately opposite us), with four such pairs of rows duplicated three times on our floor. It was the closest I've ever been to being a literal cog in the machine.

Hence my including "shoulder to shoulder". 8-)

I worked in a similar layout in a large financial institution.

When people asked me what my work environment was like, I used to say that things would be a little better if the next guy in line would stop thinking so loud.

I much prefer a quieter environment.

Voted for "in an office," but it's a shared office. There are two other desks in the office, one occupied, the other for an employee currently working off-site. I'd take a pretty significant pay cut in order to have my own office. talexb mentions the bonus of this type of arrangement, where it's simple to ask others questions and such. But the downside is that it's simple to ask others questions and such -- I just want some peace and quiet so I can get things done.

Noise cancelling headphones.

Really.

I do actually have some noise-blocking earphones (passive, not active canceling) and they work very well. However I've missed phone calls due to this. For example, my supervisor calling from a meeting to ask a question relevant to the meeting, in a room without a computer (so email wasn't feasible). I've also had several instances of people talking to me but not noticing that I have earphones in my ears and can't hear a word they're saying.

So as much as I like them, they're a little problematic. If I had my own office the interruptions wouldn't be as much of an issue.

...but I wish I didn't have to!

... I used to be over by the window, and I could see the squirrels, and they were merry, but then, they switched from the Swingline stapler to the Boston Stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn't bind up as much...

So I think I'm currently working from Storage Room B.

Actually, I'm not sure how to describe where I work... but there's a sign on the door that says, "Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Here."
