My lovely bride, Amy, is pregnant with our first child, a girl, and we're trying to come up with a name for her. Now, Amy likes "Quinn", but I think something a little more... Perlish would be in order.

I kinda like "grep" or maybe "hashref". "Grep Hashref Lester" kinda rolls of the tongue, yes?

Right now, we're just calling her "the baby", but I prefer to call by name, rather than call by reference.

Any suggestions?

xoxo,
Andy

A few ideas spring to mind:
    • Quine - similar to Quinn and would foreshadow a career in genome mapping
    • Perl - I had a friend named Pearl long ago, and it's just a minor spelling variation (ah, just went back to the CB and found kudra suggesting this)
    • DATA - if you're a Trek fan and don't mind the gender flip

    Other related ideas:
    • you will soon be a pop!
    • you will have to chop up food before the little one can chomp it
    • some will say you've been blessed
    • your announcements could say you've received a __PACKAGE__
    • if your relatives are like mine, after 6 months they'll be asking you when you'll have the next
    • later you'll have to deal with how strict to be with your daughter
    • do tell the new one not to be obsessed with abs or any other body part (or numeric function)
    • you'll definitely use warnings; but you'll doubtless find them ineffective

I have a feeling I'll be updating this later on ;-)

In chatter we starting batting about ways to make her initials interesting... We'll all be disappointed if you don't name her:

    Pathologically Eclectic Rubbish Lester

Regardless of what you end up calling her, you should print this page out, and the comments from the chatterbox out and place it in her scrap book, so she can see what she "almost" got named when shes all grown up.

and congrats and good luck to you, your wife, and your soon to come baby girl

Congratulations! Perhaps you could call her "Pearl"? Or "Hashley"?

Whatever you name her, I hope you're not going to be too strict - I think useing warnings is sufficient. if parents try to map out their siblings' life from BEGINning to __END__, they can sometimes cause a split between the family. I'm sure you'll be a good father though!

I think you should give her a perl 'pet' name (as it were)...

    call her sqrt;

Based on your wife's webpage ("When in doubt, use parsley") and Perl's parsing abilities, how about Parseley?

    stephen

      use parsley qw/Lester/;

Between the suggestions thus far and my own thoughts, nothing seems to really work except 'Perl'. However, there's a *really* interesting option you haven't explored yet.

    Ask Larry.

I'm inclined to think that this question is of the sort that he wouldn't mind receiving, and he's put a lot of thought into the naming of things.

Of course, this is also the guy who considered what the mascot for a language called 'Perl' should be, and came up with, 'A Camel', so I wouldn't expect his suggestions to be particularly literal. :-)

Anyway, it'd make a good story later on.

    From http://www.pearloasis.com/pearlhistory.html:
In the romance languages (Spanish, French, Italian), margarita means pearl.
Thus, Margaret. ("Margarita" would doom her to a life of having to hear crappy Jimmy Buffett puns.) You get Simpsons references as a bonus. (Not to mention Love & Rockets -- the comic, not the band.)

    -- Frag.

these days, the word "margarita" is the Spanish name for the flower called a daisy in English.

the customary modern Spanish word for "pearl" is "perla". in French it is "perle". in Italian it is "perla".

update: my Italian dictionary does list "margherita" as having "pearl" as a secondary definition, as does one Spanish dictionary (though two others, which i consider better dictionaries, don't).

also, in Latin, it turns out that "margarita" has "pearl" as a primary meaning, not "daisy" (which is not listed in my lexicon as a meaning of Latin "margarita" at all). it comes from the Greek, "margar/ites", which my Greek lexicon also lists as only meaning "pearl" (it is noted as having Persian etymology).

"Prov.: ne mittatis margaritas vestras ante porcos" — Vulg. Matt. 7, 6.

Well, http://www.diccionarios.com/'s thesaurus reports the following when I type in "perla":

        1. f. margarita, aljófar. La perla pequeña y de figura irregular se llama aljófar.
If I'm interpreting Babelfish correctly, margarita = small pearl. "Pearls before swine" comes from the bible, (Matt 7:6, apparently: "Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces" -- thank you, Google), where I presume the original text used the word "pearls" and not "daisies". If that's true, then the etymology may be reversed, and the Spanish word for the flower was taken from the name of the jewel.

I think Mike Meyers said it best when he was on SNL in that Sphrockets skit:
Hello Miss "!" (that's Miss Exclamation Point).

Another suggestiong, inspired by my brilliant obfuscation, is just to name her #!Quinn. Sure there are the implications of calling your child Sha-Bang Quinn, but how many people will know that.

That or perlop (or any of the perl op's).

Do not in any event name your daughter sub. Very few people would even think of the word subroutine, and she'd probably get teased for being sub-human or something..

Other possibilities include CGI::Pretty or 'Debbi' as in DBI

I really like SVt_Quinn ( as in Sweetie Quinn)

Contexta (the lady Context, yeah i know, you don't have to say it)

And of course, here's a middle name suggestion, JAPB.

When you get a boy, perlapio sounds cool (and italian:).

Right now, we're just calling her "the baby"
You mean you're not calling her "$_"? (Properly localized, of course.)

All kidding aside, congratulations and many happy years together.

    Isa. Shelly. Regexia.

I had a biology prof years ago whose specialty was herpetology. His son was awarded the middle name "Bufo" (toad) and his daughter got "Rana" (frog). If you use any of the suggestions you've received in this thread, your daughter will make them look quite fortunate. ;)

Update This thread has at least one antecedent Welcome baby @ISA...

    Perl Sub Lester is nice.

My Scalar Lester would work. (Alternate spelling Mai)

Anything with the first name Mai and a dollar sign before the middle name. Mai $Quinn Lester.

    In that same vein, what about the semi-colon to end the name. Hate to have a multiline runaway... Mai $Foo Lester;

How about Gloria after Larry's wife? Heidi and Geneva from the kids...

A certain perl book author used to do drag as "Layla Chanteuse" before his big break....

I made that last one up.

    Actually, I didn't.

Impaitence Hubris Lazyiness-Lester, Revenge on all the yokels named hope, joy, faith, etc...

    That's my 1,400 Lire...

First of all, congratulations. Second, although not specifically perlish, you should consider to name her ELSE, which is an old german abbreviation for Elisabeth and perfectly suited for any programmer's daughter. Regards!
      I know someone named Else

    my $name = 'Ben Kittrell'; $name=~s/^(.+)\s(.).+$/\L$1$2/g; my $nick = 'tha' . $name . 'sta';
      I'd go for that. :)
I once knew a lass by the name of 'Japhia'...
So, the name's out there.. And perhaps, Japhia is just the feminine of Japh after all. :)
      Jesting aside, congratulations!!!
Now all you need to do is code a script to tidy up the dataflow with the diapers automatically, and install a sleep friendly signal handlers for children trying to wake parent processes.

      Cheers,

    Congratulations! This is wonderful.

Hmm, names? How about anything starting with a B.. B. Lester. The beginning of her name would always sound "blessed".

Or you could name her Elizabeth Quinn since her initals would equal "eq". Or name her Susan Quinn!! (As S.Q.L. your daughter would be heavily sought after for all kinds of computer ads. Nine pound SQL, etc.!)

P.S. I like Margaret, Marge also sounds like Perl Margeules. (eek)

You could also call her Snoopy since he rides a (Sopwith) Camel (I think). (But I don't think she'd forgive you:).

Hmmm. Come to think of it, Lawrence of Arabia rides a camel too.. and Lawrence is Larry for short. Oh no!! (..My middle name is Lawrence for the record).
