    Zero.

Now if you asked how many 16 oz. glasses of water... let's just say I'm doing my part to keep the oceans from rising.

And where do you suppose that water ends up at some point after you drink it?
It's terribly far to the ocean from here, with desert as far as the eye can see. I *have* written Perl while riding on a camel in the Sahara, you know. :)

I must not drink caffeine. Caffeine is the mind killer. When the revolution comes and caffeine is gone I will rule the world. All will bow before me, gingerly cradling their pounding caffeine-withdrawl headaches, as I wield my jackhammer of justice.

    Woah! Bad day to stop drinking coffee! %^}

Sadly, I'm trying to cut down.

Actually, it helps. As I wean myself away from the constant caffeine drip, I find that I have less trouble being awake those few, horrid times when I have no available caffeine.

Of course, in my preferred caffeine intake format, I'm probably getting more boost from the theophylene than caffeine. Not only that, but tea comes in lots of !caffeinated formats too, so I can still drink nice hot beverages and not give myself a caffeine headache.

Used to be about 6 to 8 mugs of coffee, but then I found out that this level might be poisonous. So now I drink hot blackcurrant squash.

(No, I didn't really notice any side effects. Slightly upset my digestion, and I get to sleep more quickly now. But that's probably more to do with being less stressed in general. Oh, and staying up till 2am ;-)

I have a lot of caffeinated beverages normally.

But for the last two days I have been sick, and so it has been hard for me to get to my supply.

I tell you, being sick is bad enough. Getting a caffeine headache on top is just abuse...

if you have a fever & start getting a caffeine deprivation headache, try taking excedrin. it should help reduce the fever & get rid of your headache, AND, while it doesn't have much caffeine, but it does have some. According to the official excedrin homepage each tablet has 65mg... so if you take two, you should be safe from those deprivation headaches (which are just evil even if you're not sick) .

      of course, it's best if you just don't get sick to begin with. go eat some green veggies & take your vitamin C! (;

Ooohh...green veggies. A salad sounds great about now! Hmm, with a Pepsi (to keep this in topic (-: )!

That's 2-3 large cups of lightly caffeinated green tea :)
ive found my red panax ginseng/deer antler extract tea replaces caffeine and improves my concentration...
Wow, just the green tea...damn...I used to use the IV Drip (that's what I answered) but gravity was to slow.

It is by caffeine alone that I set my mind in motion. It is by the coffee that the thoughts acquire speed, the lips acquire stains, the stains become a warning. It is by caffeine alone that I set my mind in motion.

That used to be my mantra when I'd have 2-3 french presses of coffee,(3 cups each), before lunch, have an Americano with 3 shots after lunch. That's not counting the occasional batch made with water joe and Black Tiger Coffee (30% extra caffeine).

I've cut way back on the coffee intake to one or two cups a week. My blood pressure is down, but so is my stress level.

Water or Coke?
by princepawn (Parson) on Oct 20, 2001 at 04:41 UTC
I, Terrence Brannon (princepawn@yahoo.com), reprint the following without permission of The Rationalist Society of St. Louis, Po Box 2931, St. Louis, MO 63130, USA from No. 608 May 2001 "Secular Subjects" in which it was originally published and also without the permission of "Indian Skeptic" (http://www.indian-skeptic.org/html/) which is where I read it and was floored by it.

    Water or Coke?

In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.

One glass of water shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a U-Washington study. Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or a printed page.

Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.

Are you drinking the amount of water you should every day?

    Coke

NO Wonder coke tastes soooo good.

    1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the truck to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.

    2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone in two days.

    3. To clean a toilet, pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.

    4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers : rub the bumper with a crumpled-up piece of Reynolds wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

    5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals : pur a can of Coke-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

    6. To loosen a rusted bolt: apply a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

    7. To remove grease from clothes, Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help lossen grease stains. it will also clean road-haze from your windshield.

    FYI:

    1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days.

    2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous material place cards reserved for Highly corrosive materials.

    3. The distributors of coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years.

Now the question is, would you like a glass of water or a coke?

Yes, but exactly the same applies to orange juice or lemonade, any other brand of soda or fruit juice. Don't worry about it. It's not good for your teeth and it's fattening, but otherwise harmless.

      Regards, Helgi Briem

True Heigi, it does. But I don't think that Lemonade is transferred in that type of truck. And coke-cola ISN'T harmless, in fact, coke-cola eats away at your bones. Well. Since I read that, I've stopped drinking it and I'm seeing how long coke takes to dissolve something... The Unknown
      hello brother,
i'm very glad of your comment, apart that putting a t-bone steak into a bowl of lemon juice would do the same thing in less time...so please don't criminalize coke and sodas. i think that moderation is the key. just don't drink *too muck* sodas! and to prove i listened, i started drinking *many many* glasses of water a day!!! yeah, i feel great!
      bye
      SiG

Actually, there is a fair amount of misinformation in the coke part of that article. To wit:

      3. To clean a toilet, pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.

Citric acid is totally harmless. In fact, citric... citric... sounds like... citrus.... Imagine that, coke has the same acid as oranges. The majority of energy for all mammals is produced in the "citric acid cycle".

      4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers : rub the bumper with a crumpled-up piece of Reynolds wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

Interesting, I didn't know that. The Coke must be acting as a conduit for ion-transfer from the bumper to the more electropositive aluminum. Hmm... salt water would work too. As would any other highly ionic solution, for that matter. I imagine the key factor is the specific activity, so the doubly charged PO4(2-) will make coke great for this. Fortunately we don't have electrodes in our stomach.

      5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals : pur a can of Coke-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

See above coke acts as a great hydrogen donor to help displace any unwelcome oxidation.

      6. To loosen a rusted bolt: apply a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

      See above

      7. To remove grease from clothes, Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help lossen grease stains. it will also clean road-haze from your windshield.

I didn't know this, and to be honest I can't see why coke is acting as a surfactant. That's interesting: I wonder if it would work for any low-pH solutions?

      1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days.

Inorganic Phosphorus (PPi) is one of the driving forces for ATP synthesis. The body uses phosphoric acid extensively as a buffer to control cellular pH.

      2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous material place cards reserved for Highly corrosive materials.

So lets say that they dilute the syrup 10x to made a glass. That makes the syrup pH 1.8, explaining that. When you dilute the acid. So?

The basic fact is true: water is better for you than Coke. We should all drink a lot more water than we do. But I don't think scaring people by throwing a lack of chemistry in their face is a good way to do it; the benefits of water should stand on their own. I think the references to citric and phosphoric acid are in particularly poor taste: those are essential constituents of the all eukaryotes. They aren't "bad chemicals" in any way shape or form.

        4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers : rub the bumper with a crumpled-up piece of Reynolds wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

I remember using aluminum foil as a kid to get rust off my bike. No Coke though. And I also vaguely recall that only one side of the foil worked well. I think it was the dull side.

As far as Cola is concerned: did you know the place you're sending it, that is, your stomach, contains an industrial grade acid? Compared with it, Cola looks pretty mild..

      Makeshifts last the longest.

Yes, and both excessive exposure to stomach acid and excessive exposure to sodas can damage the enamel of your teeth.

The question is average over how much time? I used to drink probably a 2 liter of Mountain Dew or Coke every 2 days while I was in school and programming every day. Now I'm trying to cut down so I'd be 0 per day if you only count the last year or so but much higher if you counted back farther than that. Just being picky. :)

Averaging about five hours sleep a night, I find that not only is caffeine my friend but it is also my guardian, watching over me when I need to be awake.
Due to the amount of caffeine I have I find myself in a cycle which I cannot break. I cannot sleep more than my average because of it and without I cannot stay awake.
Staying awake is often quite important and benficial to ones driving habits, amongst other things.
Actually caffeine helps to keep me in line, because I have discovered that on the odd occasion when I have say 9 or 10 hours sleep, I only end up frightening my friends and family with my excessive amount of energy.

One of my family friends used to work at a preparation plant for scientific samples, and he had this story to tell:

One of the things they had was pure caffeine. It was a white powder, and was extremely strong and extrememly bitter. One Sunday, as he was going in to work (something about making moth food), he told a friend about it; the next week, several friends showed up and asked him for some. He figured "what the hell, they never use the stuff anyway", and gave each person a couple tablespoons (I think) of the stuff in plastic bags, warning them of the strength of the caffeine.

Later that day, they go to a resturant. Someone dumps about half a bag into a cup of coffee and takes a sip, then complains that he feels a little sick. The family friend says "let me try!" and downs the whole cup. Next day he's in a cold sweat and throws up about eight times; he can't stand the smell or taste of coffee for months afterwards.

Update: I'm obsessive about "good" (read top quality, arabica) coffee at work. I have a single-cup cone filter maker in my office with a Brita water filter (lots of chlorine in the water here). If only I had cold water and the time to grind the beans myself, it'd be perfect.

Does anybody else ever experience headaches from caffeine? Usually when I stop drinking coffee/soda for a while..

I've heard about it being a dehydration thing.. but..

    _14k4 - perlmonks@poorheart.com (www.poorheart.com)

Caffeine constricts blood vessels, even in the brain. When you make it a habit, your body works extra hard to open them up -- the brain needs oxygen and nutrients, and its wastes carried away. When you take that caffeine away, your body still anticipates its arrival -- those blood vessels open up wide and put pressure on your brain.

In order to cut back (which is good if your intake is over about 200mg/day), you have to go easy. Try green tea in the same quantity as you drank coffee -- you'll cut your caffeine by about 60%.

If you're drinking diet soda with aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal, et al.) in it, stop that right now. That crap is poison. It can cause headeaches, which is actually the least of the damage it does to a body.

This provides more in-depth coverage of aspartame toxicity.

Oh, and I do something to counteract it already...fairly large doses of ginkgo biloba. Even though I know it's probably not healthy in the long run, I sometimes drain two liters of Mountain Dew in a day, along with my own herbal cocktail of ginseng, eyebright, ginkgo biloba, and astragalus. If I'm drinking coffee (or tea, as I have been lately, because there's so damn much of it in my home) then it's usually a much lower caffeine intake, usually just a pot of coffee or a pot of tea.

Back in HS, I actually got to the point where I drank four liters of Mountain Dew every single day, and my time perception was totally bizarre. I literally cannot access that time period normally. (My VCR analogy: Think of watching SP in SLP mode.)

The only reason I happened to slip back into this temporal rate is because one of my sisters dared me to go off caffeine altogether for 30 days. I did. I went right back on it afterwards, but I didn't ramp the intake back up.

But after I stopped - the whole world snapped back into place. It was really, really weird.

        i've cut down on my intake several times over the years, but at some time or another find myself having to do with less sleep, and more activity, so i start chugging ye olde coffee again. i did find that if i drink a couple cups of expresso fairly quickly, though, that i don't crave the java as much throughout the day. maybe it's like that 'crack rush' i keep hearing about. (;

If you're drinking diet soda with aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal, et al.) in it, stop that right now. That crap is poison. It can cause headeaches, which is actually the least of the damage it does to a body.

hm, i knew it was bad for you, but i'd always just assumed i had an allergy towards it when it gave me headaches. (yay, i'm not a hypochondriac!)

i use caffeine the same way most people use beer. if i'm having a really bad day, i'll get as much as i can in my system. for example, a couple weeks ago i asked this girl to homecoming. turns out she's a lesbian. well, i had had a coke for lunch, and a bottle of bawls during the period after lunch, just so i could get all pumped up for when i asked her. then after i found out, i downed about three servings of penguins, went out to dinner and had two or three glasses of coke, then i got a nice double espresso after dinner. needless to say, i had a tummy ache that night.
hmm, i've done the same thing, although i generally stay far away from soda - and in your case, my expresso machine wouldn't have rested for a couple of days. ):

I have a four day work week, but the day I don't work (Friday) is the only day it is peaceful enough for me to write Perl. That said,
    if ($day !eq "Friday") { $coffee = 2; $coke = 1; $beer = 0; } else { $coffee = 0; $coke = 0; $beer = 4; }
And I usually start my weekend once I start slurring my code ;)

(What, this poll is still up? :-)

My caffeine intake has fluctuated wildly in the past month or so. By late September, I was drinking probably six cups of coffee (the stronger the better) and six or eight cans of Coke a day. (This is explained by the fact that my company gives us free pop, and the coffee machine is five metres or so from my office.)

I figured that was a bit much, so I quit caffeine cold turkey, especially after hearing people who had stopped drinking caffeine gush about how much more energy they had. That went on for most of October. (And while I was grouchy for the first few days, I was not nearly as miserable as people had told me I would be.)

This weekend, I took a look back at four weeks or so without caffeine, and decided that I was happier with our favourite stimulant. I did not have gobs and gobs of excess energy. I was not finding it any easier to get up in the morning, or go to sleep at night. And I genuinely enjoy the taste of good coffee (no, decaffeinated just is not the same). So, I have started drinking coffee again. (I think I can do without the Coke, thanks. I do not miss it.)

With as much caffeine as this poll has it will be up for a while!

      Ha ha!

      Hehe.

      eh... heh

      Uh... nevermind.

Depends - I drink 4-5 drinks, but we're talking those big liter bottles of Mt. Dew Code Red, so is that 4-5, or 8 or more? hehe

"Statistics show that too much caffeine is not good for you and I know its so easy, because I myself in the old days used to drink, oh I was up to 63-64, and not just the small white styrofoam cups"

No, not me, but I thought the quote fit well here =)

I have long noticed that my consumption of coffee in particular depends on the strength of the brew. I have fewer cups if it is strongly brewed coffee and I have lots more when it is weak stuff.

Another oddity in my pattern is a tendancy to switch to caffeinated soda (Diet Pepsi, Diet Mountain Dew, etc.) in the afternoon and there I lose track of how many I have.

Well, my Starbucks venti americano does count for four shots!
I'm using a 6 gauge IV at the moment, to feed me a constant stream of a mixture of Coke, espresso, and lightly powdered Columbian coffee...

Works better than you could imagine. just my 5 cents (ran out of pennies!)

I actually didn't know the taste of pure Red Bull until a year or so after my first Red Bull-Vodka. Now I've decided pure Red Bull is way too sweet for me so I'll stick to the RB-Vodka ;-)

      Say Hallelulia, Say Amen.

RB is just Liquid ZOOM. For a nice change try Bawls, which is just Guarana soda. YUMMIE.

But RB & Ketel One rocks. 9 or 10 of those and I'm ready to write some SERIOUS code...

I remember back in my highschool days (as well as freshman and sophmore yrs of college), I would consume not only caffine drinks (MD, Coke, Pepsi, etc.), but I was also taking caffine pills (NoDoz, Vibrin (sp?), etc.). After a while, I got so used to the caffine levels, it stopped affecting me (the so-called "caffine tolerance"). After giving caffine up for a year or two, I'm back to consuming caffine like mad... I swear... Those 1 liter bottles of Code Red Mountain Dew just don't help us caffine ingesting folk... Oh well, at least I'll die awake... ^_~
