The Perl Meetup gatherings that were previously mentioned in this section scheduled for tomorrow (the 19th) have been cancelled in all but 2 cities. Meetings are cancelled if less than 4 people RSVP.

The only two cities that managed to get 4 RSVPs were Portland and Atlanta. Paris looks like its in limbo, but with 0 RSVPs at the moment it doesn't look promising.

Anyway, since I didn't get a cancellation email, I thought I should spread the word.

tilly and perrin and i actually got together last night despite the nyc meetup being officially cancelled. it was a lot of fun. we're looking for more new yorkers to join us next month.

Cool, how is tilly doing? Is he still working at the same place that kicked him out of our little community? Does he have any plans of returning? Did you tell him that Ovid has now overtaken him to become Monk #2? ;-)

      -Blake

he seems to be doing ok. still very actively thinking about perl. still working at the same place and has some pretty strong incentives to stay for at least the next nine months.

he still reads perlmonks (hi tilly!) so, yes, he's aware that Ovid has overtaken him and seems to approve.

since his situation's a little delicate and it's his own business, that's about as much as i feel comfortable relating.

Anyway, since I didn't get a cancellation email, I thought I should spread the word.

When I signed up for the Silicon Valley meetup, I got a single email that read (in part):

Welcome! The next Perl MEETUP near San Jose, CA is Thursday, September 19 @ 7:00PM. We will keep you updated via email +.
And where there email updates? No. And on reading blakem's post, I go back to the meetup sign and find out that it thinks I haven't RSVP'd? When did it ever ask me to RSVP?

I rather think this meetup concept has some gaps in the current implementation. There's little excuse for dropping the ball after leading people to believe that there would be email updates.

Hmmm... Looking at the list today shows the Paris meeting as cancelled, but San Jose and Ottawa are back in a state of limbo. I could have sworn that both pages had cancelled messages on them last night.

San Jose only needs one more confirmation before its a go, and given the mixed message I've gotten it couldn't hurt to RSVP if you are in one of the other top cities.

    Top Cities:

       1. Portland, OR (18 members, 5 confirmed RSVPs)
       2. Atlanta, GA ( 8 members, 5 confirmed RSVPs)
       3. Melbourne ( 6 members, 3 confirmed RSVPs)
       4. Paris, France ( 5 members, 0 confirmed RSVPs)
       5. San Jose, CA ( 5 members, 3 confirmed RSVPs)
       6. New York City ( 5 members, 0 confirmed RSVPs)
       7. Washington DC ( 4 members, 0 confirmed RSVPs)
       8. Leeds, UK ( 4 members, 0 confirmed RSVPs)
       9. Ottawa ( 4 members, 1 confirmed RSVPs)
      10. London, England ( 3 members, 0 confirmed RSVPs)
      11. Sacramento, CA ( 3 members, 0 confirmed RSVPs)
      12. Houston, TX ( 3 members, 0 confirmed RSVPs)

Something's screwy with that site. I signed up for "Pasadena-Pomona, CA", which is closest to where I live, but now it shows me signed up for Portland! (Not that I'd mind meeting Ovid and merlyn ;-)

I keep trying to change back, but I keep getting "Canceled because there weren't enough people for your area". Ironically, I think there would have been enough people if it let me switch.

Anyways, I'm disappointed. I really wanted to go, but I'm stymied by a bad UI!

I completely forgot about this. There was something about the terms I didn't like, so I wasn't signed up. I have signed up now, and will be there on Thursday. I'll talk to h0mee (if I can find his number), so he might also show up. Coffee Society is where the meeting is btw.

San Jose Perl Meetup

The meetup for San Jose happened (in Cupertino), with dpuu, dws, blakem, and podmaster enjoying a coffee outside on a pleasant September evening. We chatted about various things, including Perl 6, 5.8, and the uncertain state of the Silicon Valley mongers group, and what might be done about it.
