It's true! I'll be 24 on Valentine's Day. To help you monks out, I've assembled a brief list of items I'd like for my birthday:
- one of those sexy G4 Powerbooks or those adorable cubes
- a Bernina
- a VW Beetle, midnight blue, with blackwatch plaid upholstery. Old beetle is preferred, but I'll take one of those newfangled ones if necessary
- pearls (Apparently some of you have your minds in the gutters. I don't even want to know. Follow the damn link.)
- a neverending gift certificate to Powell's Books
- my very own Wookiee sidekick
- John Cusack
- vroom
- chocolate
Happy shopping!

Making d@mn3d sure my wife gets her traditional bouquet of one dozen pink roses delivered to work. I may shop online, but that doesn't mean I trust online vendors.
I'm a simple man. If my wife is happy, then I'm happy...
If her online flowers don't arrive on time, well, it'll only accelerate when I pick up the "back-up" bouquet. If it's not needed, then she'll get a second set of flowers. If it *is* needed, well, I'll deliver them to her office myself.
The secret here, boys, is to carefully market your backup strategies.
--f
Update: Thanks, Thaigrrl, for the warning, but that's why I use the backup bouquet. I either win points for hand-delivering it or I win points for suprising her with a second one at home. Also, I've never had those problems with 800flowers.com.
Update #2, 14 Feb. 2001: The backup bouquet wasn't needed, so my wife will be receiving flowers "from" our two year old daughter. Like I said, the secret is careful marketing of your backup strategies. :D

footpad just an FYI about ordering online flowers - I saw a whole special on the news about them.
They ordered flowers from that ftd place and all of the buds were already past blossomed and already wilting by the time they arrived. And they have documented countless cases of the same thing from other consumers.
Also keep in mind that since it is the highest flower purchasing day - the chances of them screwing up the order quadruples.
This goes out to anyone who is planning on purchasing some stems for their sweetheart. Be advised that it might be safer and more worth your cash if you just stop by the local flower shop and have them arrange by hand a bouquet.
Just thought I'd pass on this knowledge. Happy V-Day (not veterans day - the other one :) )

Feeling confused by cryptic comments?
Then perhaps this (or here, if that's broken) will clarify it. (not recommended for children under 15)

"Other". The New York Perl Mongers are hosting Damian Conway that evening, and I'm going.
My girlfriend understands. She's a couple hundred miles away. She's already received her gift.
No moping involved.

Those were all funny answers, but I hand to answer "other."
I am looking foward to a nice quiet night at home. Go out
to dinner? Are you crazy? Do you know how busy it will
be? Flowers? At the unethical prices they charge this time
of year? No way. A nice home cooked meal for my S.O. is
all I am planning. The obfuscated valentine is a nice idea,
but unfortunately, my better half is still being guided
through "Learning Perl" so it would not mean much. Maybe
next year, however :)

Lessee... My plan for VD1 starts on Tuesday:
- Try to get off of work early
- Come home and put the last few items into the truck
- Kiss loving husband goodbye
- Drive to Estrella
War (near Phoenix)
- Arrive on site at about 8am
- Unpack the truck and find some big guy to help me set
up the tent
- Go visit my grandparents (in Paradise Valley)
- Pick up said loving husband from the airport in the
evening
- Go back to the grandparents' house
- Finally go to sleep
Woo. Woo. But then, Cathyn and I aren't big on the whole
VD thing anyway. But then, I hate holidays in general -
usually not because of what they stand for, but the butchering
job that Hallmark has perpetrated upon the US. Fscking
Hallmark.
1 Yes, I deliberately pick an abbreviation that
has another, less pleasant meaning. I despise the disgusting
ways in which holidays in the US have been subverted by
the Church of Consumerism. | [reply] |

I'm another vote for other. Though it was tempting to get a
reservation at Atwater's since it's also their last night
in business. But as turnstep said, they're mob scenes.
You usually get a pre-planned dinner at a higher price that
while nice, is being shared with however many other people.
Plus the wait staff only motivation to be there is to get a
better tip from the romantics.
Plan for the day:
A lovely doctor's appt at the Nose, Ear, Throat doctor.
Cram in as much work as possible to make up for the next two
weeks of vacation which will be the real Valentine's present.
That night, I'll pick up some flowers for my wife, but
we'll spend the night at home. Negotiations are still in
progress in what the meal shall be and who will do the
majority of the preparation.
Go to bed early since we have a road trip to San Jose the
next morning.
Depending on the mood I may request a J. Geils song from
the radio station.
-Mark Lemming
ps. Happy birthday ailie
Update in a semi-footpad style:
Behind schedule in packing. Spent the morning doing some
work from home. Got the tires rotated and oil changed. Wow,
were the mechanics non-busy or what? I drove in and out
of both places ~45 minutes later.
Then to the Nose, Ear, Throat guy. My MRI hadn't shown up
there so based on symptoms and and the report, they'll
shove a needle in and do some gross bits. (My wife is
looking forward to watching, though she rathered I didn't
have to have it done)
Then a rush to work. (only did 36 hours in three days, I
feel like a slacker)
And then tonight, a mad flurry of packing. I think my wife
and I will celebrate Valentine's Day late in New Orleans | [reply] |

Moping? It's not going to get that messy is it?
My plans are probably sitting in front of a computer at sparkmatch.com.
Hopefully, this'll all change when I go to university... | [reply] |

No, that's moping, not mopping! Moping is sitting around being depressed. I'm not going to speculate on what Valentine's day activities lead to mopping, the act of cleaning up with a mop.

This is the best time to go out and party! Everyone's single and just in the mood to get drunk, forget about their unloving lives and have fun with others in the same situation (like me, yup I'm pathetic like that.)..misery loves company! :o)
