I love perl golfs, so here are a few tips if you want to try your hand at it:

<li><code>y///c</code> is shorter than [length], but only if you are operating on <code>$_</code>
<li>[pop] is shorter than [shift]
<li><code>/(.)/</code> is shorter than <code>substr$_,0,1</code>. <code>/.{i}(.)/</code> is shorter than <code>substr$_,i,1</code>
<li>someone will always find a way to break your solution : )
