Concerns

by cal (Beadle)
on Jul 20, 2002 at 19:39 UTC ( [id://183650]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

It may be that I don’t understand all of the nuances of this website yet. But after seeing some people become so defensive about different subjects, reputation is the one that sticks in my mind at the moment.

Today while I was posting a question I accidentally clicked the wrong button. Then I get this page:
Thanks You need a title, sucka!
I pity da foo that doesn't push back on their browser to add a title before they submit it

It may be time to consider a different sub-theme other than insulting people's feelings when they make a mistake. Unless of course you’re expecting only perfect people to visit your site. It may be that this type of humor is inappropriate.

Obviously, you need to learn of my country's most sacred of cultural Icon's: Mr.T.

++. But, OTOH, this place can get a little stogy without some humor. And there's a difference between a somwhat abusive automated response, and the much worse personal taking-to-task that would be caused if that check wasn't there. The Monastery is a generaly supportive place -- but not of people who would ask us to help them with nothing in return without taking the bother to ask their question nicely and with concern for the ease-of-use of those who would be answering.

Confession: It does an Immortal Body good.

In partial reply to those who say things like "lighten up," I offer this link.

As for the taunt in my sig, I'll keep it as an oblique reference to one of my favorite games, and as a way of personally venting a little frustration. :)

While the article is talking about an almost totally different topic, i'm just going to give a quick response. Namely, theres two sides to every flame war. Theres never just one person. Ex. Person A calls Person B a 'fuckhead'(what is that anyways?). Person B responds verbally the quits the team in a huff. Whose fault is it? Further more, we have an obligation to respect our teamates, we do not have an obligation to flatter and stroke their egos.

I'd agree that something like "over-sensitivity" is a fault, and if it breaks up a team or a community, then it's just as bad as more obviously obnoxious behaviors.

All the same, I'm not sure how calling someone "sucka!" does a good job of, in your words, 'respecting our teammates.' It just seems like a childish impulse that someone thought clever or gratifying in some way. It's not the end of the world -- not even close -- but it's nothing to be defended, either.

On behalf of the entire perlmonks community, i would like to extend our sincerest apology that an automated mistake catcher pointed out your mistake. How dare a pathetic little perl script DARE to call you a 'sucka'. We realize how much that these incredibly hurtful words, words so heinous and derogatory, such as the incredibly hurtful "sucka" and "fool", can easily destroy someones self worth. The perlscript has been punished severely and never again will it dare to hurl such hateful insults.

      *Laughs* ++

I was going to post something like that but you beat me to it.

cal don't be so sensitive. You have look at the intent versus the purpose. This site is about helping people and calling people names etc. seems to defeat the purpose.

There is WAY too much political correctness going on and if you want to kill this site quick; let PC infect it.

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming

Whould you really prefer something more boring? I think its a pretty funny way to inform people that they need a title. Lighten up, and remember, Mr.T once said: "I pity da foo dat don't like humerous error pages." :o)

I can add to this following two points:
    • I got this message even when I had some text for title. Seems like double quote in a title can cause such malfunctions.
    • when I saw a word "sucka" it really hurt me once, because it's a bad and insulting word in Russian language.

    Courage, the Cowardly Dog

According to the Altavista translator, 'sucka' in Russian translates to 'the twig' in English. Is this incorrect, or are twigs offensive?

Kinda makes you wonder in Nodereaper sports a mohawk...

Actually this word (at least in it's latin transcription) means a female dog. Not too offencive, but it usually comes from mouth of a rough people or even prisoner who angry and wants to bite you.

and it's easy to frighten me, I'm a very cowardly dog!
        :)

But okay, I have no intentions to insist on changing it, because a lot of words will be prohibited then (who knows, may be some simple word have very bad meaning in some of hundreds languages)

        Courage, the Cowardly Dog.
