RFC: Acme modules

by cog (Parson)
on Jun 26, 2006 at 10:22 UTC ( [id://557552]=perlmeditation: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

As some of you may know, tomorrow I'll be giving a talk on Acme modules, in Chicago.

I have most of the module list, but I'd appreciate any suggestions you may have.

I'm looking for the most useful, the most useless, the weirdest and the sanest Acme modules. There may even be categories and special awards, if you want to suggest some.

Feel free to reply to this node with you suggestions or to /msg me directly if you feel the surprise element should be carefully taken into account :-)

By the end of it all, I will post the module list here on Perlmonks.

TIA! :-)

Replies are listed 'Best First'.

    There may even be categories and special awards, if you want to suggest some.

    I'm struggling a bit to find some sensible categories. Some possible categories:

    • Best joke module in the perl core. less.pm by TimToady?
    • Earliest pre-Acme joke module. Is this Tim again for less.pm? Or perhaps D'oh by C.Nandor. Or an early variation of merlyn's sh2perl?
    • First Acme module. I think the winner here is TheDamian with Acme::Bleach.
    • Acme module with the highest/lowest kwalitee rating.
    • Smallest Acme module.
    • Largest Acme module.

    Also, you might get some ideas from Most fascinating but *not really* useful modules.

      Another category:

      --------
      War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that “nothing is worth war” is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. -- John Stuart Mill

    IMHO the by far wackiest, funniest, cleverest and most playful Acme modules are Acme::Code::Police vs Acme::Code::FreedomFighter.

    Whenever I tell other programmers how cool the Perl community is, I tell them about those two modules and how they work.

    That and the Tequila race in the audience during the Siesta talk during YAPC::Eu in... Paris was it?

    Well, pimping my own module...

    #! /usr/local/bin/perl -w use Acme::DonMartin; shika pflap dipada dooba gahak skreek zap thwizzik fashunk swoosh sklo +shitty shazzatz whoosh plurp huff thwock splip blorf chomple wap plonk kwoip +thluck cheep thlik gak argle ecch plonk zika cook tak spoosh kazop kachugh sh +k gring zweech ecch klooonn glort thlik hum foosh skroook wam shklunk cheeomp +don clatter fsssh breep honk thikoosh bombah phoom blap zoot plipple spama +mp

    • another intruder with the mooring in the heart of the Perl

      Downloading your suggestion and running it revealed a bug. Acme::DonMartin converted files don't run (on *nix) if newlines are converted to crlf ;-)

      --shmem

      _($_=" "x(1<<5)."?\n".q·/)Oo.  G°\        /
                                    /\_¯/(q    /
      ----------------------------  \__(m.====·.(_("always off the crowd"))."·
      ");sub _{s./.($e="'Itrs `mnsgdq Gdbj O`qkdq")=~y/"-y/#-z/;$e.e && print}
