Time to stop paco?

by Ovid (Cardinal)
on Aug 07, 2001 at 00:37 UTC ( [id://102593]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

I'm sure that some of you have noticed the "Vote for paco" line in my sig. I just checked and, as of this writing, paco's lone node has a rep of 82. I thought it was an amusing little post and I certainly encouraged voting for him through my sig, but I'm wondering if I should put a stop to this. Any thoughts? If I keep this going long enough, paco could potentially hit the Best Nodes list. Just thought I would take a poll of monks and I'll take that line out of my sig if enough object to it.

Incidentally, when I first made that post, there was some discussion in the CB (not initiated by myself) regarding making paco the 'unofficial' mascot of Perlmonks. I took that to mean that some people appreciated the tongue-in-cheek attitude behind the post, though I'm sure that others don't.

Note: No, I'm not advocating making paco any sort of mascot or anything like that. Just wanting to poll fellow monks about whether I should remove that line from my sig.

Cheers,
Ovid

I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other.

However, your 'vote for paco' crusade did make me think a bit more about how I cast my votes. After reading the poor paco post, I decided to actively seek out good posts from newer members to vote on. I like sending a "welcome to the club, thanks for participating" message.

If it has that effect on others, and make the monestary a more inviting place perhaps its OK for paco to hit the best nodes list...

Well, I don't think paco or your signature can do any harm to us!

Besides, you don't specify what you mean by vote, so it might by a ++ as well as a -- :-)

Let's face it, paco has a purpose! More than one, actually:

    • is paco a he or a she? I'd like to use strict; and be objective, but I think it's a he
    • when you first join PM and paco has more XP than you... well what else could motivate you better?
    • you've never cast a --. You're too humble. You're too new. You don't know what's going to happen, maybe the CB will even display you've downvoted. Try on paco!
    • you're secretly trying to find paco's password to impersonate h(im|er) and bring h(is|er) glory back to life.
    • one day, I know, paco will seat right next to NodeReaper and watch all of us... we should treat h(im|er) right while we can
    • if someone starts downvoting paco, we can actually start a paco XP prediction daily contest, prizes are yet undef, but they all \Ovid*. It can be done even if paco receives ++ votes only but it's a bit more predictive.
    • from now on, in my code examples, $paco will deserve just as much attention as $foo and $bar
    • one day, paco's XP may be just as informative as $NORM, who knows

    -- TMTOWTDI

    * That is, they all reference Ovid

is paco a he or a she? I'd like to use strict; and be objective, but I think it's a he

Haven't we learned our lesson about the he/she thing?

Never stop paco ... he's our man!

New mascot ? (Re: Time to stop paco?)

I found it funny, too at first, and ++ paco...
However best jokes are the shortest ones.
To my mind you should just let the thing die by removing it from your sig.

But this let an interesting question open :

What/who will be the monastery mascot ?

"Only Bad Coders Code Badly In Perl" (OBC2BIP)
      That's easy - a Monkey.

    In the Chatterbox recently..

paco thinks being an AM is
not so bad.. well back to the
    hot dog stand! ;)

Seriously though, I hope paco hasn't come back recently thinking to get into Perl again and horrified at the ton of posts/++'s has changed his name.. how could we know, and what if he is here now?

I was going to joke about it (well I did;) but maybe enough's enough?

p.s. thanks for the minuses guys, just made friar a few hours ago so I'll take this node down if it goes much lower.

My suggestion would be to drop paco from your sig, not because paco on Best Nodes would be a problem, but because there are plenty of references to the idea now and the best running gags only run so long.

Without your sig, I'm sure we'll still see plenty of paco references popping up from time-to-time and that paco's XP will continue to grow.

    P-A-C-O!

Why not? One vote each isn't going to harm the universe. I found it funny, I think most people would too; I don't see any reason to stop.

I think you need to ask yourself, as I ask myself in troubling times,"WWPD?"

Besides being incredibly useful and an overall nice place to hang out, this site is so funny.

I wish I were still taking my anthropology class and had to do a field study--I'd definately do it on PM. We have our own politics (formal), politics (non-official, but often more powerful), social classes, education system, dialects, and weather system (well, maybe not that yet). It just goes to show that any small portion of the "real world" is going to be a reflection of the whole.

    Keep paco.

Ah, but we do have a weather system; you can just go to jcwren's Monk Map and find the latitude/longitude for a monk, and from that you can find the weather conditions! :)

Well, after reading all the references, and paco's lone post, I still have to say that I don't get it. Was paco's question the very first question to ever be asked on PM's? What does the tongue in cheek reference mean? I know I may be taking my life in my hands here for asking, but I guess I've let my curiousity get the best of me.

Very funny Scotty... Now PLEASE beam down my PANTS!
