in reply to Is Perl dead ? YAIPD Thread

Well, these rankings do not show all the story. Perl is pretty high on the chart because lots of questions were asked on stackoverflow and many modules were created on Github previously. However, the problem is that Perl is not a popular language to learn nowadays. I naively hope that it is possible to change this at least somewhat. Otherwise Perl will slowly go down in ratings.

It's true that Perl is not dead and still in a position many others envy.

IMHO part of the decline is the positioning and the problem many have to justify Perl.

What I observe is a kind of delusion of past grandeur, like the big European colonial powers experienced after the second world war culminating in decolonisation. And this meant an economic decline and lost if clout.

While the French were capable to forge a new alliance with former enemies in the European community, did the Brits continue to ravel in their exceptionalism and their imperial approach.

But the average Brit is far richer now than in Imperial times and many people still want to migrate there.

What I mean is that we need to readjust to the new reality, play our strength and find new allies instead of focusing our energy on building huge fleets of carriers trying to stubbornly defend lost territory.

People want free, functional, fun code that's easy to implement. This is why Matt's was so successful. Perlmonks shuttered every section that encourages mass creativity: code catacombs, craft, snippets... down the memory hole. Cool uses indeed. Wake up and smell the code. Answer less stupid questions, and write more fun code. Give it all away. Build it and they will come. Don't be safe: be bold, be dangerous, be free. Simply kick ass. I accept your nomination for the President of the Free Repubic of Perl.
