<p>See [id://1182640|my reply] in the thread [id://1182627] that a <c>1.23</c> style versioning should provide maximum compatibility, specified in a format of <c>our $VERSION = "1.23";</c>. Of course, TIMTOWTDI, and you'll see [mod://Regexp::Common|some modules] use interesting versioning schemes and some modules use code to determine <c>$VERSION</c> like parsing it out of a VCS <c>$Revision$</c> string. See the documentation in [mod://ExtUtils::MakeMaker]'s <c>VERSION_FROM</c> and [mod://ExtUtils::MM_Unix]'s <c>parse_version</c>, but note that those are probably not the only tools that parse version strings out of module files, so I'd really only recommend <tt>our $VERSION = <i>string</i>;</tt>.</p>
