PerlMonks on the community dashboard?

This is a great idea for a "Grafana-ish" community dashboard collating metrics from various Perl sites and communities. Should PerlMonks offer to participate? (Sadly the author did not mention us in a list of resources he contemplates metering initially.)

The way forward always starts with a minimal test.

I'd be unhappy to include any requests to outside resources. Doing that would mean we would have to ask users to opt in, and to have a data processing agreement with the receiving end of these requests.

I'm not sure what the benefit is - maybe Perlmonks can simply send the number of logged-in users or the aggregated count of distinct IP addresses to the dashboard - then there would be no need to handle PII and no need for anybody to opt in.

Dean is talking about including a Javascript snippet, but doesn't give any details.

Of course, what is sent by said snippet could probably be sent by other means, from PM's servers. Dean wouldn't get individual IP addresses, but for what he claims the project is about, that should not matter. Signs of activity and - MAYBE - the topic should be all that is needed to be useful to his project.

Between Matomo and Adobe's service, I'd be less distrustful of Matomo. Partly because it is (mostly) open source and partly because it's based in Europe. The CPAN modules Dean mentioned don't look useful for PM. Other than to note many integration "kits" on the website, I didn't dig into details.

As for potential benefit to PM, it might give PM more visibility.

Between increased visibility and avoiding privacy issues, I'd chose avoiding privacy issues. If Dean won't accept what PM is willing to share, then I'd say his project is not worth dealing with.

I am NOT saying PM should participate. Only offering my thoughts.

I've noticed PM was missing, too. Maybe they are ashamed of the old-school look?

I really don't like what Dean is proposing. If he wants site usage metrics, we can arrange, somehow, to send those periodically.

PS: I have no idea what "Grafana-ish" means.
