Redis is also a great option (ideal, I'd say), it's literally a data structure server with certain atomics built-in. memcached is an federated in-memory key/value store meant for caching web apps in a clustered environment. I got a little excited when I saw Tie::Redis, but then saw it's failing a ton of tests.
