It's the absolute minimum - just one bit on the server downlink. I added one more edit to my question to make this crystal clear. I thought it was already.

With respect the question posted was not at all clear in explaining the problem you are trying to solve, hence several confused people asking for clarification.

And despite his (best?) efforts, I still have no idea what he's actually trying to accomplish, or why he's suggesting that the client play a guessing game with the server.

Imagine you have to pay for each bit of data sent from the server 1 perlilion dollars, while you don't pay anything for the data sent to it. Is this explanation down to earth enough for you?
