Is "Tidings: What's New at PerlMonks" Obsolete?

by kcott (Archbishop)

G'day All,

Just to be absolutely clear, this is about "Tidings".

The first paragraph of that node begins with:

"Your site maintainers are constantly improving the appearance and functions of PerlMonks to make your experience here the best it can be. To find out what has changed recently, or since the last time you logged in, peruse the headlines below."

Unfortunately, while "constantly improving the appearance and functions of PerlMonks" is certainly true, reporting such via Tidings is not.

I make a point of checking this node every time I log in (that probably averages more than once a day). I rarely see any updates; the last was 16-Jul-21.

I don't wish to single out any particular changes, but it seems many occur without notification in this node. Purely for example, the recent "User Profile Element: CPAN author ID" would seem like a prime example to be notified in Tidings.

I've been a registered user for well over a decade; as such, I'm familiar with some for the foibles of this site. For newer users, or less frequent visitors, this may appear as stagnation. Let's avoid that by either using Tidings regularly or retiring it to the monastic archives.

Discussion appreciated.

Thank you for the kick in the pants. I have updated Tidings with this latest feature.

Note that you can get a "notification" of Tidings changes via its link in any nodelet. Most notably, the Information nodelet has a link to Tidings labeled "What's New at PerlMonks". If there are changes to Tidings you haven't seen yet, this link will have "(*)" appended. A similar link also appears in the "Cabalists' Nodelet", which is available to cabal members.

I reckon we are the only monastery ever to have a dungeon staffed with 16,000 zombies.

All good - thanks for the update.

Yes, I knew about "(*)". That's actually what I check each time I log in. Today there was a "(*)"; which disappeared when looked at the node.

Not really, this feature is still experimental and under development and was changed and partially deactivated again.

Tidings would have changed a couple of times in the meantime.

I'd say Perl Monks Discussion does what you want in terms of actuality.

      Thank you, LanX. Perfectly explicated.

I think the feature is now "stable", and have therefore updated Tidings.

I reckon we are the only monastery ever to have a dungeon staffed with 16,000 zombies.

while "constantly improving the appearance and functions of PerlMonks" is certainly true, reporting such via Tidings is not.

it seems many [changes] occur without notification in this node.

What other recent changes do you think are Tidings worthy? I did a quick skim over all the PMDs since 2021-07-16 and didn't see anything I'd call Tidings worthy...

I reckon we are the only monastery ever to have a dungeon staffed with 16,000 zombies.
"What other recent changes do you think are Tidings worthy?"

There may be a disconnect between what I and others consider "worthy". While I'm happy to accept that, perhaps some change to the opening paragraph of Tidings would clarify the situation: a simple modification along the lines of s/change/major change/ might be all that's needed.

It's also possible that some changes may be in an experimental or work-in-progress state which would make them inappropriate.

I haven't kept a list of what I consider to be missing; however, a Super Search has found:

While I would consider that to be a non-exhaustive list, it does highlight at least three items that could bear revisiting (and perhaps further action).

Thanks. What I'm asking for is a concrete list of specific changes that you think should have been announced in Tidings.

        To address your points:

        • "Notification of updates to "Tidings"" (Nov. 2016)
This is a discussion of Tidings notifications and how we might make them more prominent, so, not really apropos to my request.
        • "Re^6: New posts added earlier in posted list" (Jan. 2021)
"Supplications in the Monastery Gates; layout in Nodes to Consider..." I'm afraid those are too vague to be actionable. I don't even know what "Supplications in the Monastery Gates" is supposed to mean; the Gates has always had a Seekers of Perl Wisdom section...🤷
        • "Invalid ID in reply notification" (Dec. 2021)
I was never able to identify a cause. In any case, a random glitch causing a node to disappear is not something we'd announce in Tidings! Nor even a fix to such a bug, unless the bug were well-known and affected more than few users.

Now please do me a favor and stop saying Tidings is disused/obsolete. Corion and I both update it as we deem necessary. If you or any monk knows of a change which you think could be Tidings worthy, feel free to /msg gods or post in PMD, and we can discuss it. Thank you.

I reckon we are the only monastery ever to have a dungeon staffed with 16,000 zombies.

Obsolete? No. Under utilized? Yes. Need retirement? No, cause only pmdev can see list of recent pmpatches... and Tidings isnt exactly a commit log so

As someone who is quite new to the Monastry having been here a mere 18 months, I don't think I had come across Tidings until mentioned by kcott. I've been quite active at exploring several parts of the Monastry but not this one...

I'm not suggesting anything of its relevance or importance, purely observing.

The three places I look most are my own inbox followed by Newest Nodes and occasionally Random Node if I'm looking for inspiration, entertainment or both.
