Are the Perl Whirl and other geek cruises still going strong? Sadly, I've never been on one, interested to hear what they were like from someone who has.

They seem to have fallen by the wayside, alas. The piece in Wired by Steve Silberman (wayback copy) is a great read.

I've never tried taking a cruise, but I may just do that for a future vacation to give it a try... my next vacation is a long way off though, unfortunately. Boo on traditional corporate America and their incredibly stingy vacation allotments. :-(

I went to the Philippines for two weeks back in April, but all the pandemic related regulations made moving around between islands pretty difficult, so I ended up spending most of my time on Cebu and Leyte islands.

Hmm, i feel absolutely no desire to be locked into a floating casino for a week.

Not sure if this is still a thing these days, but in the pre-Covid era, many freight ships had a cabin or two for tourists/travelers. Wouldn't mind going from Europe to Asia that way, seeing the Suez canal and stuff. Especially when i could do it without stopping at touristy places every day that only exist to legally pick my pockets...

While not a vacation, I have come close multiple times to booking a cruise and working for the week while out at sea. I'm within an hour from a cruise port, and work remotely anyway, however I've never pulled the trigger because I wasn't quite sure how to sell the family the idea without it sounding like a personal vacation, from them.

Wifi stability and speeds have been exceptional on my past cruises. We should really consider doing a YAPC, I mean, YAPSea one year afloat a cruise. (perhaps during the off-season to make it more affordable) Hotels wouldn't be needed, food is provided... I think it could work. Who wants to join me on the YapSea Committee?🤣

oh?!? Seaside missing from the list?!? :)

Wild and rocky seaside in the Mediterranean Sea doing spearfishing is my dream destination, possibly with some good company and an endless stock of cold beer and glacy white wine :)

I'm sold! When is the PerlMonks RLM at your beach-side villa?

Ha, I was shooting for broad categories with the "etc" catch all.

I've always loved a nice beachside open air bar, if I'm going to a beach resort that's mostly what I want to do. :-)

Wandering around an unfamiliar city - either here in the UK or overseas.

Portsmouth was the last UK city which has plenty to see and explore as well as lots of dog-friendly places to eat.

Turkey is my preferred overseas destination. A country where I want to set up a second home.

Interesting question but perhaps not ideal for a poll as there are so many options...

With my "perfectly honed sense of direction", i can achieve that by walking out of my front door and not using any sort of digital map. *SCNR*

Turkey is an interesting choice, any specific set of reasons or more of a "feel" thing? I mostly consider places in Southeast Asia when I think about moving someplace outside the USA.

My girlfriend is here in the states working on her PhD, but she's originally from Azerbaijan and tells me she speaks fairly fluent Turkish. If we keep seeing each other long term I could probably plan a vacation there with her and make her play tour guide for me. :-)

        It came about by accident!

My then-girlfriend and I were looking for a holiday destination that had to be in school holiday time as she worked in a school. There were a few places on the shortlist but we picked a Turkish holiday as it seemed the best value. We both just fell in love with the resort and the people and went back the next year, then to Istanbul the next winter. By this time I was learning Turkish and the more I visited, the more I realised I felt at home.

Many years later I think I understand why...
The culture is similar enough to here in the UK for me to understand what is going on and not feel too out of place but also different enough to present lots of interest and a fair few challenges.

Turkey had this effect on both us us. Several years after we split up, said ex-girlfriend got a job teaching in Turkey and has spent many years living there.

Hopefully I'm not the only one that finds it humorous that while there is a pretty good spread across almost all options to answer this poll, so far a solid zero people are using their vacation time to go visit family.
