Notification of XP increase has gone wild (maybe)

by davido (Cardinal)
on Oct 22, 2022 at 01:17 UTC ( [id://11147589]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

The past few times I've logged in here (sadly, days or sometimes a week apart) I'm seeing big bumps in XP. Most recently, the XP nodelet congratulated me on +92.

At first I thought it was some recent post getting a lot of attention, but I'm not seeing that. Then I thought maybe a really old post hit reddit or something. But when I search my posts by reputation I'm not seeing new top contenders. That leaves the possibilities that I have no idea what post is getting upvoted so much, or that a bunch of posts are getting upvoted a little, but continuously over the past month or so, or that there's a bug.

Has anyone else noticed this behavior?

    Hi

I looked again into your post history and into the The Voting/Experience System.

You have almost no posts newer than 4 weeks and the Rep-to-XP ratio is 1/3 for such older nodes.

    Hence a +92 XP requires 1 upvote on 276 older nodes. °

So if someone tried to improve his XP by continuously up-voting all your >5000 old nodes, this effect could happen. And you would hardly detect this because your node reps only increased by 1.

This might be motivated by the fact that there are not enough new nodes for upvoting. Some fellow monks are famous for having a high XP to (own) post ratio, while their own posts have only average reputation. That's most likely gained by their own continuous voting.²

    > or that there's a bug.

    there is always a bug ... ;-)

°) for instance, I have 48 votes left every day. Spending most of them during 6 days on 276 of your old nodes, would give me a 25% gain, hence about +78 XP for me while you gain +92 XP.

    update

²) I won't do the Carlson-Niemann now to point fingers ... But guys plz keep in mind that automated votes are against the rules! :)

That's a bit like a game of Telephone, eyepops. If you follow the link you provided you'll see that I offered "compulsively helpful" as an option to a poll ("My primary motivation for participating at Perl Monks is", and cited davido as the originator of that term ... and that I linked to his OP wherein he described a class of Perlmonks user, presumably but not necessarily including himself, with that term. Just for the record :-)

And also for the record, I didn't go on an upvote binge, much as I am indeed a fan :-)

The way forward always starts with a minimal test.

Well, this node deserves an upvote from me.

(Full disclosure; I've had the pleasure of working with 1nickt for a number of years, sometimes on different components within the same initiative, other times just distantly within the same organization. If anyone's compulsively helpful, in a good way, it's him.)

I can see that a certain monk has upvoted 750 of your nodes in the last 30 days. This is a monk with lots of votes to spend, meaning they're already pretty high level, so I'm not sure what their intent is. I hope they see this, and will take my advice to go read RFC: Policy regarding abuses of the voting system. I am a little concerned, because this monk upvoted a ©ertain ®ecent troll over 1,110 times, and downvoted them a mere 60 times. To me, that pattern casts a shadow of suspicion on their motivations.

I suspect that LanX's theory here is a likely explanation.

Hmm ... there are actually a handful of obvious suspects in Saints in our Book ...

        After some meditation ...

I think the only way to "repair" this is to adjust the rep2xp economics.

Like only x first votes per day on posts older 4 weeks get a gratification. This might be hard to implement tho ...

My incentive to do this would not so much be the rigged saints ranking, but rather the distortion in rep weightings of posts.

        > I suspect that LanX's theory here is a likely explanation.

Often it takes a criminal to catch a criminal! ;-)

not me, but bumps after a long period are not unusual.

Anyway, you can use one of the xml-tickers to check which of your nodes were upvoted recently.

    edit

I meant the "noderep xml ticker" here but ignored that it will only report for the last 24 hours ...

Please keep the result after the first click, because each request will reset the counters.

Has anyone else noticed this behavior?

    In a word - no

My XP has been going up at the sort of rate I would expect. They go up a few each day, slightly more when I find posts that I can add some value to by commenting...
