I went to school close to a sewage processing plant

There was no nearby school, but the effluent ponds from a local Cheese factory used to provide a similar experience if you passed near them and the wind was in the right direction. Aerating the ponds was apparently the solution to that. They started using electricity-driven paddle wheels to periodically beat the hell out of the liquid, and there has been no unpleasant odours since. (Maybe they've since switched to a more energy-efficient method of aerating.) Cheers, Rob

I had exactly the same problem in Ashfield, NSW (Sydney suburb) as a schoolboy. The school was nearby but an alternative route generally avoided the problem. No idea how they dealt with that — we moved to the Hunter Valley not long after which put sufficient distance between us and the smell. :-) — Ken	[reply]

I had exactly the same problem in Ashfield, NSW (Sydney suburb) as a schoolboy. Close to the Parramatta River, perhaps ? Back in the 70's that river could get pretty ripe. I think they've significantly improved it now, by simply reducing the amount of pollutants that enter it. Are you still in the Hunter ? Cheers, Rob	[reply]

This would have been mid-60s. I was very young; I don't recall much about the surrounding area; I do remember the horrible cheese smell. I'm no longer in NSW; I've been in Melbourne for the past 40+ years. — Ken	[reply]
