Minor Perl hobbyist - along with LISP, and Assembly Language.
I made my living scripting mainframe Rexx and JCL, then some COBOL, and now a niche therein - banking ACH;
I remember working for a bank in New Orleans that was changing their Treasury web front.
FTP scripts were dynamically tailored to embed time stamps in file names - and the programmers were using COBOL in place of Perl to custom the FTP scripts! The file content was pre-formatted reports written in COBOL and Easytrieve. That is a hind-site view.
