MSDW?

By now, we've all seen the news reports indicating that Morgan Stanley Dean Witter was one of the principal tenants of what was, until this morning, the World Trade Center. What many may not know is that Phil Moore of MSDW gave a memorable keynote at OSCon in July, indicating that among other things, perl is the "secret" of the securities industry, that everyone uses and nobody (until recently) admits to, and that MSDW has an enormous number of perl programmers in its employ. IIRC, the number he stated was 1800, and I believe that would make them the largest single employer of perl programmers worldwide.

That said, what has anyone heard about Phil and his colleagues? Were any/many of them housed in the WTC, and if so, are they okay? What of anyone else in the community who work in lower Manhattan (NY.pm members, etc)?

I interviewed at MSDW a couple of times. Their investment in Perl is huge. They were going to buy Damian outright (pay the whole 60K) but yet another society told them to back off.

However, all my interaction with MSDW was up at 47th street. I didn't even know they had anything in the WTC. I also interviewed with Lehman Brothers/AMEX and they are definitely in WTC. .

I think Phil is best known for writing the IBM message queue Perl interface.

Apparently MSDW had 3500 people working the WTC. I don't know if Phil and his colleagues were amongst them, but the last I heard there was no news from them. I'm trying to see if I can find out more.

Update: Both Philip Moore and Hildo Biersma are listed as safe on Damian's web page.

I did some consulting work for MSDW a couple of years ago. At that time, Phil's desk was in the midtown building, not WTC.
