Naming NMS

by davorg (Chancellor)
on Sep 18, 2001 at 13:46 UTC ( [id://113073]=perlmeditation: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

I've always realised that Not Matt's Scripts is a temporary name for the NMS project. It's really not a good idea to name something as negatively as that.

However, the NMS abbreviation seems to have stuck so I'd like to come up with an alternative name that retains that abbreviation. I'm not very creative, so I'm open to suggestions.

If you're really firm about retaining the abbreviation, I'd say:

    Net Muggle Sourcery

The idea being that Wizards have woven spells for use by Net Muggles, who cannot cast spells of their own.

I came up with the double entendre 'Sourcery' (a misspelling of 'sorcery', as well as 'a source of source (code)', as a bakery is a source of baked goods). davorg himself suggested 'Muggle', which should be familiar to anyone who's read the Harry Potter books, the slang usage of which is described here. I provided 'Net', and there it was.

Well, I don't know that I'm very creative either, but here are a few ideas:

    • Nicer Matt's Scripts
    • Net Master Scripts
    • Not My Stuff!
    • Newly Minted Sources
    • Naturally Moist Services
Of course I have to sign this Never Mind Silliness.

You could try to convince people that it doesn't stand for anything, like the roleplaying publisher TSRŪ
You might get away with it.

Tactical Strategies Rules, for those of us who've been customers of theirs long enough to remember.

As for the question at hand, how about:

      • Newly Minted Security
      • Never More Secure (as in, "You've NEVER been MORE SECURE")
      • Nudging Muggles Securely
      • New Mexico Scripts (since Matt is, IIRC, from South Texas, he should find GREAT offense at this!)
      • Newer More Secure (Archive)
      • Needling Michael Schwern ("This Archive is my Bitch!")

      Spud Zeppelin * spud@spudzeppelin.com

I thought it was Tactical Studies Research.

    Newly Merchantable Scripts

That said, Petruchio's entry seems way superior to this or anything else I heard in CB.

    See here.

I think "Network Management Services" and "New Management System" are inspiring. How about "Network Movers and Storers"? "Net Munitions Storage"?

A little late to claim "new", but since you're replacing stuff written in the last century,
    • New Millenia Scripts

NMS Matt's Scripts
by zachariah (Initiate) on Sep 18, 2002 at 03:09 UTC

If the N already doesn't mean anything and these are the NMS Matt's Scripts, then NMS already stands for NMS Matt's Scripts.

    recursively like:
    GNU - GNU's Not UNIX
    LAME - LAME Ain't an Mp3 Encoder

The words in parenthesis need not be used:
NMS - NMS (version of) Matt's Scripts

    Not Merely Scripts

Reflecting the desire that they also be used as tutorials / learning aids.

    Not Meager Scripts

Now Made Silver - implying improvements
