Number of replies shown in Monastery Gates incorrect?

I don't know if this has been reported before, but I noticed that the number of replies listed on a post sometimes changes when the post is being viewed in the Monastery Gates or the SoPW sections.

For example, at the time I type this, looking at the recent Anonymous Monk post titled regex issue at the Monastery Gates I see it says 3 replies, but for the same post in the SoPW section I see it says 11 replies. Just an FYI.

Gotcha, it could certainly be the intended behavior then. I have no opinion on the "best way" to display that nor any desire for it to change if it's as intended. I only reported it because at first glance it looked like a glitch.

Thank you for the report; I believe it is now fixed. Let me know if you see otherwise.

I reckon we are the only monastery ever to have a dungeon stuffed with 16,000 zombies.
I see some weird stuff at Read from a header file like C, on SoPW page, it shows 9 replies, but when I look at responses, I count only 5 total. I don't see anywhere the other 4 posts are? - Not an issue with replies to replies. Maybe I'm imagining things? Just seemed weird. Normally I see all the direct replies and all the replies to the replies.

update see something similar at Socket SMTP email inappropriate i/o control operation, SoPW page shows 9 replies, but I count 7 when looking at the responses. weird.

Ok. Thanks. I just made another patch. It will not make a difference for any nodes already posted; let's keep an eye on new posts over the next day or so. Thanks again!

It does appear to be fixed, thanks.

Go to User Settings → "Miscellaneous" → "Show count of all replies ☑" to make it count the full reply-tree, rather than just immediate replies. As mentioned in Help for User Settings:

Show count of all replies: When viewing posts in sections or on The Monastery Gates, you will see the current number of replies. You can have it show you just the count of immediate replies ("children"), or the count of all replies ("descendants"). To get the latter, check this checkbox.

I actually already had that option on. The behavior I see is that with it on, the regex issue thread I mentioned shows "3 replies" in The Monastery Gates but "11 replies" in Seekers of Perl Wisdom.

If I remove that option (uncheck it), and look at both again, I see it says "3 direct replies" in both sections.

      Again, just FYI.

UPDATE: I should clarify, that based on the portion of Help for User Settings that you quoted, this does seem like a glitch to me (albeit, a very small one). That quoted explanation implies to me the intent is to display the reply count the same way, according to the display option selected in an individual's settings, regardless of what section you are in.

Or I'm a crazy person, which is an increasingly likely possibility.

Oh, interesting. I just assumed it was that setting, since it behaves as if that setting is off. If it's not a bug, then it's a highly counter-intuitive feature, based on the reading of the user settings help -- since I would interpret the help in such a way that the setting applies to the Gates as well as to individual sections, unless otherwise noted. Ah, well.
