Notification of updates to "Tidings"

"Tidings" (aka "What's New at PerlMonks" in the Information Nodelet and "What's New" in the block of links at the top of each page) is updated infrequently: there have been just nine additions in the last two years: 4 in 2016 and 5 in 2015. It is far from obvious when changes occur. I would like to propose that some prominent notification of changes to this node be implemented.

Here's some suggestions for discussion:

I have noted that "(*)" appears after "What's New at PerlMonks" in the Information Nodelet. I'm guessing this is intended to indicate a change but it is neither obvious nor prominent.

Not obvious -- until you know why it's there, as you do now.

But, nonetheless, creating an item in Newest Nodes seems reasonable; it may not be "reasonable", however, for those who visit Newest Nodes as rarely as I visit either of the others you propose.

Ill-advisedly, but for the record, teaching Grandmother to suck eggs, now: as always beware of getting what you think you want. One of our inherent limitations is that one can have only so many "prominent" items of any certain size (ignoring drop downs, links to continuations, etc) that one can place on a single-screen's worth of information... and the size that satisfies "A" as being prominent doesn't get that rating from "B."

My suggestions were very much intended as "suggestions for discussion".

Like you, I also rarely visit RAT (maybe once a month) but I'm aware that others use it more often than Newest Nodes (or, at least, substantially more often than I do). Similarly for the Front Page (which I perhaps look at on a weekly basis).

While Newest Nodes would be my preference (based on my usage), this has very little to do with what I personally want, and is more about whether such a change is generally wanted and, if so, how best to implement it.
