Nodes to Consider: Incorrect Reply Count

A day or two ago, I considered "Reaped: Re^2: Parallel::ForkManager or something like that?" for reaping (it was an anonymous duplicate that had been reposted after the user logged in). At the time it had one reply: I considered this for reparenting to the non-anonymous duplicate "Re^2: Parallel::ForkManager or something like that?".

The Reparent consideration has gone ahead: no problems there.

The Reap consideration is still in "Nodes To Consider": it now shows 3 replies. However, when following the links in "Nodes To Consider", and also looking at the entire thread ("Parallel::ForkManager or something like that?"), there are zero replies.

The non-anonymous duplicate "Re^2: Parallel::ForkManager or something like that?" has two direct (Re^3) replies and six total replies (various Re^3, Re^4 and Re^5 posts).

There's clearly a discrepancy between the count of reported and actual replies. I'm out of guesses as to how this discrepancy might have occurred.

      Interestingly, it is usually reported in August.

        And even more often in a month whose name starts with A.

        ($q=q:Sq=~/;[c](.)(.)/;chr(-||-|5+lengthSq)`"S|oS2"`map{chr |+ord }map{substrSq`S_+|`|}3E|-|`7**2-3:)=~y+S|`+$1,++print+eval$q,q,a,

    Thanks to everyone who replied. Here's a brief summary of those responses:

    This is an old problem. It has been reported on several occasions: over the last decade, three of those reports occurred in months beginning with the letter "A".

    A little over fifteen years ago, tye reported in "(tye)Re: Node reply count bug?":

    "There is currently a table to track number of replies. It is being phased out ... When that work is finished, such problems should disappear."

    Maybe that refers to an unrelated Reply Count problem; however, if it doesn't, can anyone advise how that work is progressing?

    I had a look through Tidings: I couldn't find anything relevant. I then looked through (historical) Tidings: "Number of Replies clarification Oct 11, 2008 at 03:00 AEDT" (looks like you should adjust for your timezone) was the only related entry I found. Adjusting my User Settings, as that describes, to just show direct replies, tells me that Nodes to Consider post (from my OP) has one reply instead of three: sadly, it still has zero replies (as I originally reported).

    I seem to recall that there was some change a long time ago relating to the caching of this information, I may well be mistaken. tye or jdporter will likely know.
