This question has been asked before here (quite a while ago): [OT] simple algorithm for assigning students to class sections so you might review that thread. In it, BrowserUk put something together that might be good enough for you.

If it doesn't work out, you might post an example and someone might be able to help you improve it.

    Thanks! I'll give that a try first. We've got fewer than 50 students, but we also have a scheduling nightmare because of small classes (max is 6), and small staff (only 10 full-time equivalent teachers)
