My travels are more like refugees running from each successive dictator.

After Bush Jr. was elected, I soon found myself in Canada. Not because, but in hindsight there's seems to be some correlation.

After Stephen Harper was elected, I moved to England (not as quickly as I'd like, but still...) Managed to get my citizenship after I left (are they slow? heck!). I should have stuck around for Trudeau.

Now the Tory/LibDem coalition has turned into the Muppets Take Manhattan (or whatever the UK equivalent is). I think I just have to get my citizenship, and then find a new place.

Any recommendations? Unfortunately, my SO is not so keen to learn another language. Otherwise, I'd suggest somewhere in Scandinavia or Netherlands, or even Ireland. Australia or New Zealand might work, except for how restrictive they seem to be on immigration.

Unfortunately, my SO is not so keen to learn another language. Otherwise, I'd suggest somewhere in Scandinavia or Netherlands, or even Ireland. ITYF that there is a higher proportion of non-English speakers among the population of England than Ireland. There may be many reasons not to emigrate to the Republic of Ireland, but a lack of knowledge of the Irish language isn't one of them. HTH.	[reply]

If you want to move to Scandinavia, you can probably do it without your SO needing to learn another language. I did US-to-Sweden in 2008 and it's shockingly easy to get by with only English here. To the point that, if you want to practice Swedish with strangers and they get any hint that you're a native English speaker, they'll immediately take advantage of the chance to practice their English instead. It's one of the major reasons why my Swedish is still atrocious after nearly a decade here. (The other major reason being my own laziness.)	[reply]

Last year I spent a day in Lund, passing through Copenhagen and Malmö. While it was quite a "corporate" visit, my wander around Lund for dinner was quite pleasant, and hardly anyone had a problem with English. In fact, I listened in on a corporate training session (some HR "diversity" material), which was delivered in English only. To be so close to the rest of Europe, and yet in a charming, friendly smallish town, seems idyllic. Even more idyllic is to be in the heart of Europe wandering around the charming, friendly smallish Saarland village of Perl. The village of Perl has population 2,129 while the municipality of Perl - consisting of the village of Perl plus thirteen other charming villages - has a total population of 7,593.	[reply]
