<p>
I have no issue with that idiom, <em>per se</em>.
I use it myself in production code and don't recall ever having had any problems with it.
</p>
<p>
It's included in [id://1382|chromatic]'s <em>[http://onyxneon.com/books/modern_perl/index.html|Modern Perl]</em> book: see the
"[http://modernperlbooks.com/books/modern_perl_2016/10-perl-beyond-syntax.html#RWFzeUZpbGVTbHVycGluZw|Perl Beyond Syntax - Idioms - Easy File Slurping]" section.
That also makes reference to the [id://1217204|issue raised] by ++[id://171588|BrowserUk].
</p>
<p>
I also concur with what a number of other monks said about improving the error message.
