I'm curious and have to ask; what made you decide that Windows 8 was better than 7?

Personally, I felt that I could have lived with 7 even though I never actually used it at home, but 8 was just a train wreck and nail in the coffin.

IMHO Windows-7 was the best up until they decided to remove the concurrent remote desktop feature from the Pro edition.

It was very useful to have a Windows-7 on a VM and have multiple concurrent sessions from different users using xfreerdp if they had a task that required Windows. When they stopped that (and opting out of that "security fix" was not an option), it turned Windows-7 back into the usual crap.

I was happy with XP and felt that win7 was retrograde in the interface. Win8 looked like it was gearing up to compatibility with the windows phone, still a believable product at the time. Seems to be a rule of thumb: robust technologies help you to predict the future. Non-robust technologies do not help you predict what will replace them.

Ah, I see. For me, the phone-iness of it hurt a lot. If I wanted a phone, I'd have bought a phone... I also despise the websites that have decayed from efficient tools into Fischer-Price baby toy interfaces because of mobile, and W8 dipped into all that ire for me.

I gave up on MS a long time ago. Except when forced to work on it at my job, I never returned. I do have one MS laptop that I use to figure out what problem the family or friend is having with app(x) or whatever. But during my years doing 1st and 2nd level IT support, I got so sick of having to reload and update the various flavors of MS that I just stopped using that product. WinXP was the last I actively installed and more or less could tolerate.

Now that my work years have passed, I am more than happy to let that MS laptop sit until I get asked for some help, at which point I tell them it is going to take a while. I have settled on a set of apps on Linux which do everything I could ask for and then some. The only thing I use a VM for is to try out a new flavor of Linux. I find that anything that runs Enlightenment as a front end is fine with me. (Yes, I like eye-candy).

Guess I am just reflecting here. Kind of nice to be in that position... . Maybe I can get used to this retirement thing yet, hmmm... it makes it a lot easier just not having to deal with MS (99% of the time anyway).
