I've been using UltraEdit on Win...
It has color syntax highlighting and supports macros, block editting, ftp editting, and buch of other goodies (spell checker included). You can get it at any tucows mirror.

Do you know of a similar editor for Unix based systems? Vi is cool but I find myself typing loads of extra i's and a's when I have to use anything ielse :-)

Try NEdit for XWindows. It has syntax highlighting, macro programming, and more. I use vi if I'm stuck at a command-line, and NEdit otherwise.
I will admit, I came from a windows background, but live in Linux-land now. NEdit has a Windows-ish feel to it, which I like.

As always, I would like to jump in and support Jed. Full syntax higlighting for many languages,
built in scripting language, and runs on Win32, unix console and in X Windows.

I actually prefer jed to emacs, but the perl mode for jed
is vastly inferior to cperl-mode for emacs. And I don't
have the motivation to hack up my own perl mode for jed.

You can also use the SolutionSoft PerlBuilder.
It has some of the features that BBQ mentioned, looks and feels like
VS Lite, or the PythonWin IDE.

Yeah but the two things that keep me away from Perl Builder are:
1. No block editting
2. No multiple file support
Those two are AT LEAST a must have. How do you edit HTML when you don't have block mode editting?

emacs has cperl-mode, courtesy the unstoppable Ilya
Zakharevich (you can get it from his
CPAN directory). It can handle syntax colouring, too.
M-x font-lock-mode is what does it, I believe. I've never
paid too much attention to the intimate nasties of Emacs'
colouring and font fiddles.
There's PerlBuilder, but my experience with it was not
encouraging. David Grove, known primarily for paranoid
anti-Microsoft anti-Activestate rants, has released a
commercial Perl IDE called
Code Magic. I haven't seen it, so can't say how good
it is.

I've used the CodeMagic beta and liked it very much. David may be inclined to rant, but he sure can code. His product is a joy to use. I intend to upgrade to the full CodeMagicCD.
If the beta is anything to go by, the $130 which also includes a raft of tools from around the web all integrated under the one IDE will be worth it for me personally. If you have lots of time to download and explore everything else out there, are happy with your current editor, then maybe this package is of questionable value. But I love the editor, and while he might be kinda crazy, I guess he deserves my 130 bucks! :-)

wsh supports perl, so you could go that route.
Also, Premia's (ahem... StarBase's) CodeWright supports perl as a macro language. I think it's ActiveState(?). In addition, CodeWright supports syncing between Visual Studio and itself. You can also use an emacs keymap if you're so inclined.
I've been using it for about three years now, and while it does have its warts, it's a pretty decent editor.

I don't use it personlly myself, but I herd HomeSite was very good. It's been said by some of my friends that's it the only editor on PC systems that comares to BBEdit, which is the number one text editor on the Macintosh system (me is a Mac guru).
I too wasn't very optimistic about learning vi, but I realized that it's the one editor that's guarenteed to be on all unix systems. That and all the good things I hear about it from Unix gurus. So I cracked down and learned it. Now Vim is the only editor I will use on any *nix system. (I'll settle for VI if Vim is not available though :)
Give it a shot, it's really not that hard. Once you learn, you'll never turn back...

I don't do much heavy-duty perl programming, but a lot of run of the mill CGI stuff. Homesite is my editor of choice (for any language) when I'm in Windows. With Linux I use KDE's Advanced Editor. Both of these programs had color coding and smart indenting.

Hi
Since noone else has mentioned it I would like to commend
textpad to the audience if you are coding in windows (i
use vim in unix).
It is sleek, easy to configure and a pleasure to code with.
I know that sounds stupid but it is efficient and feels good
to use. I love it...in fact its the only shareware I ever
payed for (after I used it for years without paying my
guilt finally got the better of me and since i loved it so
much i felt i could not pay for no longer). | [reply] |

I am playing around with a product called "SynEdit" (see www.mkidesign.com/synedit). It has a few annoying nits (like not putting page numbers if you print the listing, and always defaulting the page size to letters - those 'mericans have a lot to answer for) but is not too bad.
