Sorry, never intended to be "rude". I'm fairly unaware of the etiquette here. I just had a question and was hoping to get help. These seemed like the place to get it.
I'm an amateur perl guy at best. I mostly do text conversion using perl scripts. But, they wanted CGI and they had me. So I got it.
The "bug" is merely used to gather an exposure/clickthru ratio that's placed in articles so we can tell supplier's who's links are mentioned in an article (free of charge I might add) how frequrently people clicked to their page. I can only tell you it's not for 'nefarious' purposes. You may have no reason to believe that, but it's all I can say.

Calling new users who are asking legitimate questions "rude" could certainly also be considered Rude.
