How long does it take to get a CPAN id?

rbc has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hi Monks,

I went to the CPAN site and followed the
instructions on that site.
I noticed that some more senior monks have
requested and recieved CPAN IDs.
I congratulate you and ask ...
how long does it take and why does it
take so long?

Thanks

It took me about a week, which seems to be fairly representative. The CPAN folks all have many other distractions, and nothing breaks if the process takes a while. There's a larger discussion of the scalability of the process at use Perl;.

It took me about a week and a half to get mine. I was on tenterhooks the entire time, waiting to upload my module. In the meantime, I played with the module some more, made a couple of last minute changes (based on some excellent suggestions from tye) and wound up writing 33 tests for less than 70 lines of code. When I finally got my ID and uploaded, I forgot to include the tests in the manifest :)

Side note: 33 tests for 70 lines of code definitely seems excessive to me. However, since I was subclassing CGI.pm, I had to have my module operate in both a function and OO mode, thus forcing me to essentially duplicate all of the tests.

Serious congratulations on applying for an ID. Do all of us a favor: write down everything you did to get your first module uploaded and then post a tutorial. I had a couple of unexpected hoops to jump through and I didn't write things down, dang it (though, to be fair, some monks have stated that my hoops were not typical).

    Cheers,
    Ovid

I'm in the same ballpark as chromatic. It took roughly 7-10 days before I got my CPAN id in the email.

The waiting period can very, but I think the reasons for the wait are good.

    1) Not just one person approves your ID
    2) There are real people checking your request
    3) Patience is a virtue

May we ask what module you are preparing to release to the world?
