NodeReaper Come Hither!

Hi All.

I was just on the CB when someone requested that one of his nodes be put up for consideration/deletion because he wasnt happy with its content and there were much better replies in the thread. So I put it up for consideration and in a few minutes there were enough votes and the node was reaped.

Now it occured to me that perhaps this type of thing could be automated. Howabout this:

If a node has no content, no replies and the title "Please Delete" it should be automatically reaped.

While there are of course much more important things to done in the monastery this was thought by several venerable members (chrisf, virtualsue) to be a good enough to post for discussion so here it is... :-)

(ha crazyinsomniac I beat you to it!)

We've had similar discussions before and the upshot has generally been that nuking lousy nodes "just because" runs a little counter some of the spirit of the place. People screw up from time to time and it's good to be reminded that everyone makes mistakes. (Now, whether they acknowledge those mistakes is another thing entirely.)

Also, the opportunity to reply to such nodes can't be underestimated. I can think of a few key threads over the past year that've led to some interesting, thought-provoking replies. (They're pretty easy to find.)

Besides, with the number (and near ubiquity) of the janitors, it's also pretty easy to get a truly valueless node quickly tossed.

In short, we could certainly add tools like this, but there's really nothing better than people learning to police themselves and to think/preview before they post.

    YMMV...

I would suggest that the reputation of the root node in this thread speaks to fairly wide community interest in allowing automatic removal of a very specific category of worthless node. It isn't always that easy to find an editor who is able to take time to help remove such nodes when it's needed.

It's all very well to say that people need to learn to 'police' themselves, and I agree, but mistakes do genuinely happen and it would be very cool to have another way to get rid of the junk without having to waste the valuable time of senior monks with trivial housekeeping tasks. We gotta computer - let's use it :)
