The title modifications don't bother me too much, but I do offer an alternate solution. Allow each user on user settings to have a special "pre-title" field which with they can put their pre-title bits. Then, also add a setting "Node pre-titles" with options of "On", "On, ASCII-stripped" and "Off". The second option would convert any non ASCII character to a space or similar. Then, when nodes are collected, the titles are dynamically modified to include those pre-titles or modified versions of them, or none at all, which would appear to satisfy most of the user's comments on this issue.

Aren't there enough Dingbats on this page already? No, seriosly, I think dingbats in titles would just give people an opertunity to make them unreadable, unless you're posting code in the title (which is a bad idea), the dingbats should not be alowed. If they do have their place, it's in the obfu section

Howdy,
I don't see how we can possibly have a serious discussion on this topic with an option to vote for "I like cheese!".

PS - I vote no. :)

What is a dingbat? (dict doesn't know) | [reply] [Watch: Dir/Any] |

from http://www.maran.com/dictionary/d/dingbat/.
Special characters like stars, hands, arrows, and geometric shapes you can use to decorate a document.
A collection of dingbats is found in a popular font called Wingdings.
A Google search would tell you more that you might want to know. :)
BTW, I don't like them in node titles either.

There are dingbats hanging around Perlmonks? Quick, call the National Geographic! They need to cover this for their next issue. | [reply] [Watch: Dir/Any] |

I have yet to see a dingbat around here, except in a few comments complaining about dingbats. :( | [reply] [Watch: Dir/Any] |
