RE: Code Catacombs Reorganization

One quick suggestion: categories are good, but sometimes
they may "overlap". I think it would be good idea to leave
the ability to just browse through that long uncategorized
listing, too. | [reply] |
How about subcategories ?

I know that subcategories can also be implemented by the "multiple categories" thing, but maybe a (shallow) hierarchy wouldn't be bad either.
Especially, I'm thinking about having a subcategory under Web Stuff for grabber utilities that snarf information from websites, since there are relatively many such scripts there from what I've glanced...
If there are no subcategories, then simply attaching a Snarf category to these scripts would accomplish the same thing I guess.
On another thing - I think a (short) description what qualifies the programs in the current section wouldn't be bad either. This could help people understand that HTML Utilities does not contain any HTTP transfer related programs etc. - I don't know if this is a problem with people searching in the wrong places, but in this way, even a one-time visiting Anonymous Monk could maybe realize that he/she is searching in the wrong place ...

A short description in the section overview
by Corion (Patriarch) on May 27, 2000 at 13:21 UTC

In the section overview there are currently only the titles of the programs displayed. These titles range from
simply snmping.pl to OPPS - Grab weather from yahoo (2). I think that either there should be more emphasis on the title (like "In the node title, give a one-line description of your program") or the short description (underlaid gray) should be displayed there too.

New Code in Catacombs Suggestion

I think the Most Recent Additions should also include a list of the categories to which that code belongs, as the title does not always make it clear.
Of course this is not in yet for the new posts, as categories haven't been here for long.

Some additional categories:
- Unix Admin
- Interface (i.e., Curses, Gtk, Tk, etc)
- Graphics

I often copy and paste code from the catacombs.
Is it possible to be able to download the code in a .pl file
if they are correctly encoded in code tags?

I think it'd be nice to see which category the new submissions were placed into. This especially relates to the multiple-category submissions, as they may have relevance that one may not be able to see simple off a curt title. | [reply] |

I agree - sometimes the titles alone can be misleading.

Actually being able to put code into more then one catagory would be good.
That way if something fits in more then one place it can be put there.

That capability does already exist and I did plop some of the code in more than one category.

When you list code, why not list the catagories beside it.
Even if you are in a certain catagory listing, it may
be helpful to see all of the catagories a certain bit of
code fits.
