Looking at the front page right now, I see: All of them, frontpaged by RMGir.

The main reason I "rushed" to become a Friar is that I wanted to contribute to the administration of the site.

But I find myself approving or frontpaging any post that seems well written, relevant, and not homework.

Am I frontpaging too much? Should there maybe be a system where approving a node or frontpaging it uses up votes, to control mad friars like myself?

Thanks in advance for your comments.

BTW, if this is a FAQ, I couldn't find it. A pointer to it would be appreciated. What is consideration? and Friar don't really cover this point.

You may find your answer at how to use the moderation system (available only to Friars or above). To quote vroom from that node:
My general criteria for choosing something to go onto the frontpage.
    • Does this impress me?
    • Does it display well? Are CODE tags used properly, does it eat up relatively little horizontal and vertical space?
    • Overall quality.
I believe the topic "Why to front-page nodes" has be explored at least twice, and many monks have expressed their opinion (use Super Search). Some may do so now.

As for you front-paging too much, I think you do; however, I don't think you're the only one. I've seen a lot of nodes being front-paged lately by newer Monks that I don't think should have been (I don't really want to point any fingers). Now, that doesn't necessarily mean anything, but I don't think I could have been wrong all the times that I thought, "Why did Monk X front-page this?"

P.S. I think instead of a system where your regular votes are used up to front-page a node, a system where multiple monks have to approve a node for the front-page would be a better quality-control measure. The biggest issue I see is whether we have enough enthusiastic members to support that sort of system, and I'm confident that we do.

"Why did Monk X frontpage this?"

Perhaps a text field to enter a reason for frontpaging a node would be in order?

On the issue of frontpaging too much, I recommend only frontpaging one every couple days or so. There are lots of monks >= level 6 around, if a node is worthy, someone else will most likely frontpage it.

I concur. If we're going to list the names of who frontpaged what, it's reasonable to let them explain why they did it.

Update: I don't necessarily want every frontpaged node to be rigorously justified, boo_radley, but when someone frontpages a node that isn't obviously worthy, it'd be useful to give them a chance to explain their decision. (And NTC gets its share of empty considers, too.) Just a thought.
          End Update

I think I've frontpaged one node since reaching Friar. Usually, the impressive nodes have been frontpaged before I get to them.

Update 2: It occurs to me that I don't frontpage nodes mostly because I hang out at Newest Nodes instead of The Monastery Gates, and forget all about this "front page" thing.

Another criterion that I use when deciding whether or not to frontpage something is: "How will this reflect on Perl Monks?" The Monastery Gates is (probably) the first exposure a visitor will have to the site, so I think it's reasonable to exert a bit more editorial criticism when deciding what to put there. (For instance, Juerd's recent comment on a not-so-Friendly home node impressed me, displayed well, and was of above-average overall quality, but I didn't frontpage it -- we don't need to advertise our internal disputes to the rest of the world.) This strikes me as a fairly obvious point, but it should be mentioned.

Or better yet keep the nodelet small and reuse the current input field. It's meaning being dependent on the checkbox checked.

PS> This is not my leap-node, though it was supposed to be. Missed by 2 :-/

        perl -pe "s/\b;([mnst])/'\1/mg"

I was really torn as to whether to write this reply.

While I agree that not just anything should make it to the front page, and that on ocasion ive seen nodes that were not necessarily worthy. My worry is that after seeing your node newer monks might somehow feel that their opinion of worthyness is not as valid as that of older hands, and more importantly that we will end up with a relatively static front page.

I hope that people dont front page useless nodes. But I also hope that people front page worthy nodes without worry. Otherwise the frontpage could end up a quite boring place to go...

a system where multiple monks have to approve a node for the front-page would be a better quality-control measure

I don't think this is a good idea at all. Comittees almost always make bad descions, or even worse no decisions.

Well in my case as a new Friar, ím allways afraid of frontpaging something and somebody would say "Why this guy frontpaged this?, iīll make him pay by downvote him all his writeups!", i know maybe iīts a little bit paranoic (right now i am hopping that you donīt downvote me!).
I realize that when i started my Perl knowledge and XP journey, I dreamed about the day when i could upload an Image and later could frontpage a node, but now that i can do both, i preffer to be a little bit shy that unleash all those newbie wishes.(I think my english became a little bit confused!).

Well thatīs all, what i wanted to say was that when i entered to Perlmonks, i knew i were going to learn Perl, but i realize that it has even teached me patience!

I remember my Commodore 64 game "ACE", that if you touched a key before the whole game was loaded (almost 15 minutes in my dataset) it showed a message:

    "Patience is a virtue"

    And it restarted the Commodore!

Thanks to all those who are helping me learn!

    Edgardo
-- for writing "Pearl". So, you were rightfully paranoid.

      Nah, I'm just kidding.
