Perlmonks T-Shirts

by Apterigo (Scribe)
on Jun 03, 2000 at 05:58 UTC ( #16167=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

I don't know if the ideas has ever been passed around, but why not have a Perlmonks T-shirt to help pay for a dedicated server? Maybe put on the front, along with the person's Perlmonk name, and their real name, and on the back have a cool perlmonks logo along with a nifty perlmonks slogan below that. Just a couple of ideas. -Apterigo

Agreed! Maybe vroom could talk to the folks at Think Geek, since they do have adds running here every once in a while, and suggest something of the sort. Red T-Shirts only? :o)

I know that printing quality T-Shirts is rather inexpensive, but having a custom name on it might elevate the price. Maybe instead of having a custom name, we could vote on a Obfuscated Code to print on the back. (I know I have my pick already).

Yes, I agree. Instead of having custom names we should vote on an Obfuscated Code to put on the back. However, instead of "There can be only one!", I think we should try to make an Obfuscated Code with the word PERL in the negative space.

Humm.. that idea ties in vey nicely with the "Some contests?" node.
        Anyone interested?

    Yes, please!

I would like mine in sackcloth. Can I also get a cowl with that? Obfuscated code is fine and all, but I'd like full obfuscation. I mean what's the point of a shared secret if you can't pull off the Perl equivalent of Santarchy?

But seriously...cowls are probably not an option. Is camo?

I have to agree with Nuance; although this would be cool on a shirt, I like the idea of some of the better Perl Poetry better - perhaps Hack Perl?

As for the cowl idea from neshura, I like. I like a lot. Enough to suggest that instead of t-shirts, or perhaps in addition to t-shirts, we look into hooded sweatshirts or jackets. Sure, it wouldn't be sackcloth, but just think - a black, hooded sweatshirt with "Perl Monks" would be good enough. And, I could get away with wearing it to the office on "tie-days". <G>

    - Ozymandias

I also really like the idea of a hooded sweatshirt - it would at least fit into the monk theme. Of course, if your office environment dosen't really allow sweat shirts, we'd also have to offer polo shirts or something like that, but for the main thing a hooded black shirt would be "my thing" - or maybe a hooded red shirt.

As for the obfuscation code, I'd really like the obfuscated code embroidered (or however that's spelled) on the shirt in the same color as the shirt color, so that you don't notice the code at first glance...

Now we just need to see if thinkgeek does manufacture them at reasonable prices

I really like the idea of a hooded sweatshirt! I personally don't wear T-shirt with writing on them except to the gym, and the other people at the gym don't really need any additional confirmation that I am a geek :P Seriously, though, I'd wear a black hooded perlmonk sweatshirt :) I don't know about embroidery, though. I think it might look kind of odd. --Ivory

I wouldn't care to have my name on there, and it would undoubtedly inflate the price (quite a bit i'd expect), but the rest of it sounds great!

I really like this idea. I would like to add a vote in favour of having our perlmonks identity on them (I picked one I'm happy to wear - sorry about those who didn't ;-))

I don't like obfuscated code, so I'm not in favour of that. I like elegant code and clever code, code that isn't what a beginner would write, but not obfuscated code, I think it's silly. Not that I'm saying I wouldn't buy one with obfuscated code, just that I find it boring :-(

Baldrick, you wouldn't see a subtle plan if it painted itself purple and danced naked on top of a harpsichord, singing "Subtle plans are here again!"

I'm all for it. I think it's a great idea. I even stopped
working long enough to post(something I want to do more of).
I like black or maroon for the shirt color. White or black
for lettering. I also really like the obfuscated
code idea on the back of the shirt.

We need this to be a voting question.
I want to put in my order for one of each.
They could even have different code on the back.

    Collect them all!

    Sounds pretty cool.
Seems to me that this would be ideal for a 'design a t-shirt' quest.

I would love a shirt, and would don it proudly! Since I I am a newbie, I guess the Obfuscated code does not appeal to me a lot, but I would not mind that on a shirt. The name would not mean a lot, unless we were all some meeting. A good perl poem would be nice!

I think Shirts would be a great idea. I think or could handle it. The T-shirt designed could be used for the first contest or something. Make some really cool looking code or maybe a design for the front and back.
