"If the only tool(forum) you know is a hammer(PerlMonks), every problem(question) looks like a nail(SoPW post)"

...OR...

"fora and fauna"

disclaimers:

  • 'most anything perlish is accepted and welcome here at Our Fine Monastery
  • I'm not complaining...
  • nor proposing site change...
  • nor fomenting mass monasterial desertion...
  • rather, hoping to expand folks' horizons a bit (starting with my own)

with that said, I'll get right to the point*:

  1. our beloved perlmonks.org isn't the only good online Perl resource around
  2. some questions might be optimally asked elsewhere
  3. some discussions might be optimally held elsewhere

google for perl forums(fora?):

you can read/search/post-to these newsgroups all from the comfort of your browser:

perl mailing lists are plentiful plus archived at CPAN:

jasmine Jazz runs a solid-looking ubb gossamer threads perl forum:

not to mention the-not-necessarily-forummy info/resources at:

Hrm... how did I forget this'un?

wrap up with a question:

  1. What other Perl fora do you frequent?
  2. What's your criteria for ask/tell/announce somewhere outside these fair walls?

    cheers,

Other than the weekly visit to use.perl.org to read up on Perl-related news, I don't read any other Perl forums at all.

So why not? Well, consider a few of the finer attributes of this site:

    • Many extremely friendly, helpful, knowledgeable monks. It is a very rare occurence that I don't receive 4 or more excellent replies to a question. Even if I have an off-topic question, chances are someone in the chatterbox can point me in the right direction.
    • A large archive of posts to search - nine times out of ten when I have a question I can do a quick search and find the answer.
    • An excellent system - everything from the chatterbox, to the moderation system, to the link shortcuts and user home nodes. This beats mailing lists any day.

The list could go on and on. I don't see any need whatsoever to frequent any other Perl forums, and I have a feeling this one will be around for some time to come :).

comp.lang.perl is dead. Dead, dead, dead! Don't use it. Use comp.lang.perl.misc instead.

Other than that, all the advice is fine. (Though you forgot use.perl.org, which is good for perl news)

If you're looking for something a little more real-time, there's always IRC (think: souped-up Chatterbox); although it's important to note that they're not necessarily dedicated to (or welcome) answering questions.

        --k.

although it's important to note that they're not necessarily dedicated to (or welcome) answering questions.

Or interested in talking about Perl at all.

Or friendly to people they don't know that actually want to type.

      On second thought, don't bother.

      -sam

      IRCnet too has a medium-sized #perl channel.

Undernet also has a less strict channel where perl questions are often asked... #cgi

I feel like this post is about me.

I swear I try not to ask stupid questions!

This place is far, far, far, better suited for the "occasional Perl hacker" than CLPM... a pecentage of those folks are evil, lizards, or evil lizards and nearly all of them end up being the ever egnigmatic Frank... Sometimes I think it is I who am Frank....

Ohhh please don't kick me out of Perl Monks...

    I'll get smarter I swear!

There's more than one way to do it, but only some of them actually work.
