Acronyms. (Perlmonks-specific Acronyms)

by krujos (Curate)
on Jul 25, 2002 at 15:15 UTC ( [id://185218]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

I was thinking about all of the acronyms used on Perlmonks. It took me quite a while to get them straight. I thought it would be nice to have some kind of page for new monks to explain them to new users. I have searched a bit and found a few nodes about the subject here and here. I am not proposing anything like a linking system to the definition, just a static page some where in the help docs or the new user pages that explained them, or at least made people aware of how to find them. What do you think?
Thanks Josh

I'm not sure I follow you. One of those nodes discusses silly acronyms, and the other discusses acronyms in common usage, and yet I thought your question was about Perlmonks-specific nodes.

Since I don't recall a discussion on the matter, here is a list of the PSAs (Perlmonks Specific Acronyms) that I know about.

AMAnomymous Monk (also known as Anonymonk, a.k.a Anomo).
    CBChatterbox
CUFPCool Uses for Perl (thanks petral).
FPFront Page (as in "who FPed the SoPW on finite state automata?")
FPCfullpage chat, one way of keeping up with the CB.

obfuobfuscation. (ybiC is quite correct in pointing out that this is an abbreviation, not an acronym. And it isn't specific only to Perl Monks for that matter)...
OPOriginal Post or Original Poster. For instance, diotalevi might reply about how it would be possible to walk the op-code tree and reassign lexical pads on the fly, to which adrianh will reply "yeah, but the OP just asks how to format a number to 2 decimal places".

Once from efnet #perl that's about to be used more here is

      KLB Known Lazy Bastard

"KLB" is used for people who waste others' time by asking simple questions after having done zero work to solve a problem themselves.

My idea encompasses both types of acronyms. The typical perlmonks acronyms mentioned above, and the things that you are likely to see in messages.

      JAPH Just Another Perl Hacker
TIMTOWTDI There is More Than One Way To Do It

      etc...
Perhaps the page should be devided into two sections or something to explain that they are different...
      Josh

One wee-tiny quibble, brother krujos.   AFAIK, TMTOWDI sans the first "I" is the original form of the "There's More Than One Way To Do It" acronym.

FWIW, http://www.acronymfinder.com/ is my favorite place to find what an acronym stands for.   There's even an AcronymFinder form on my homenode, in the Search Jones section.   Of course it doesn't (yet?) contain PM-specific acronyms.

As long as I'm quibbling, the term "obfu" isn't actually an acronym, rather an abbreviation.   Like the GBians who say "telly" contrasted with USAites' "TV".

Now if we look at the term "fsck", it appears to be a combination acronym+abreviation of "File System ChecK".   So does that make it an acroviation?   Or a CAA?   Hmmm... howzabowt abrevonym?   ;^D

      And what about "lart"?
Since I don't know what it is, it may not be an acronyms.

I rather like the mystery myself. It took me (as an IT outsider whose first and only computing experience was Perl) a long time to realise what AFAIK, RTFM, LOL, ROFTOLSDF etc stood for, but that was like when you go to a new country and for a while you don't know what the road signs mean and how the money works, but then you work it out and you begin to feel part of things. The working it out and getting one's accent right and so on are all part of the process of aculturation. IMHO.

Actually this place is pretty easy to understand. Some places I visit seem to be occupied by space aliens. For example, can anyone please tell me what i<3 means?
For example, can anyone please tell me what i<3 means?
      It means either:
ice cream ("i" followed by an ice cream cone on its side)

I love... ("I" followed by a heart laying on its side)

      conditional test (for (i=1;i<3;i++) {...})

Anyway, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it. ;]
