We need a chance to reconsider considerations...

on Aug 22, 2002 at 12:36 UTC ( [id://192003]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

While trying to compliment particle on Re: Defining your own [...] shortcuts?, I inadvertently considered Defining your own [...] shortcuts?. (DamnDirtyApe, if it makes you feel better, I'd ++'d your post first :-) )

Would it be possible to have the Approval Nodelet go to an intermediate "Are you sure you want to consider this node for <insert text here>"?

It would save many of us (well, at least me) embarassment when we confuse the "Consider Node:" and "Chatterbox" inputs...

It's also probably simpler than implementing "Un-Consider"ation, I'd think.

    I'd find this pretty annoying if it weren't optional--I hate the 'Are you sure? Are you really sure? Really, really sure?' approach.

    I believe tye had some plans to make the consideration box look less like the chatterbox, which should reduce this problem. Right now it doesn't happen too often, and is quickly cleaned up. It's similar to /msh--a little embarrassing but not too serious.

    As a temporary fix you might move your consideration nodelet and chatterbox far away from one another.

    I'm no CSS expert, but the following two lines in my custom CSS solved that problem for me:
    #approval_nodelet input { background: #ddeedd; } #approval_nodelet td { background: #eeffee; }
    I never confuse the two forms anymore because the consideration form is tinted green.

    Update: the original idea was Kanji's and can be found here (I thought it was in the CSS thread above, but it wasn't)

    I think it should be configurable somewhere in user-settings. I wouldn't want it because I don't like "are you really sure.."-messages in generell.
    I may give you the tip to change your nodelet-settings a bit so that chatterbox is at the top of them and considerations at the bottom or something big between them ;)

      LOL, giant, that would be too easy :)

      Actually, that will solve the problem; I'm going to do that now.

    (Rudely replying to my own node)

    Kanji mentioned to me in a /msg that (OT) Mistaking the Approval Nodelet for the Chatterbox is also a good way to avoid this problem. Between that and moving the approval node down below Sections and the CPAN Nodelet, hopefully the mis-consideration issue won't happen again for me.

    Oh, and thanks to the kind editor/god who unconsidered Defining your own [...] shortcuts?.

    Edit: This is the same solution that blakem recommends above, but in pink instead of green...

    Very good proposal, ++.

    This would also be a place to use Javascript for a good purpose, for once (since it is what JS was really invented for initially): the submit button has onClick bring up a confirmation popup that sets sure=Yes before submitting. If the user has disabled Javascript, the sure parameter will be missing, so the engine returns a form with a <input name="sure" type="submit" value="Yes">. More convenience, less server load.

    Makeshifts last the longest.

    I think that would be a good option. I have, on occasion, hit ++ when I meant --
    or ++'d the wrong post. Once you click the ++ or -- radial button
    you had better mean it.

      not really - there's a cure for hitting wrong vote (before you actually hit the vote button). Turn on the null vote option in your user settings, then when you hit the wrong vote, you can always "reset" it to null.
        Cool. I'll do that.

        I see that you are a mommy. Congrats!

    I'd rather see an option so that the person whom considered the node could un-consider it. A variant on that theme would be to only allow them to un-consider it if it has no votes.

    This would make the people who don't like the "Are you sure" approach happy. It would also make it possible for people who are quick on the trigger (admitedly, that has been me a few times) to fix their mistake without bugging other people or wasting their time.
