    As they say, use the best tool for the job. If you just want to get text messages, use one of the Perl chatterbox clients. If you want to be able to view new messages, using a browser, without having to constantly reload, use Java, in an applet form. Sure, some browsers support PerlScript, but it hasn't caught on yet. (And would definately be better than (gag) VBScript.) Of course, if you want to try to write a PerlScript chatterbox client, nobody is stopping you...
