With much help from Babblefish, I think I got the gist of most of it, but one phrase cropped up a couple of time that is obviously a literal translation of something, slang possibly, that left me in the dark even with the aid of context.

I guess talking moon refers to Redmond (Mond == moon, reden == to talk).

Talking Moon - I love it. One the best euphemisms for the "Evil Empire" I've run across.

I was pretty sure that it was referring to MS some how from the context, but I could not make the connection between MicroSoft and talking moon. The Redmond connection didn't even cross my mind. Thanks.

Thank you very much for posting this!!! My father, a programmer who has lived in Germany for about 20 years, had never heard of Perl before I mentioned it to him. I just forwarded a copy of the article to him, but the Babelfish translation was so rough that I'm unsure of the quality of the article.

Rest assured the article is very good. iX is the for-business sibling of the most reputable German computer mag, c't. Their editorial quality is usually as close to flawless as you can hope to get. (Though I've been somewhat peeved about their constant .NET coverage lately. Ironically, the more for-the-masses c't has been covering Linux more and more at the same time, even going so far as to give a short intro to Linux From Scratch in the latest issue.)
