Unanswered post search?

by Marza (Vicar)
on Dec 11, 2002 at 22:38 UTC ( [id://219202]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

I don't know if this function is wanted but why not have a search for unanswered posts?

People here are very good about answering stuff, but does stuff go unanswered?

I can also see it for the quick scan people who just want to take a peek and see if they can be first for an answer.

Just some random thoughts

I've only been active on PerlMonks for about two months now, but I don't think I've seen a single question gone unanswered. Quite a number of saints seem to make it a point of honour to try and help out, sometimes even a few days after the question was posted. In this respect I don't really think it's worth the coding effort.

Being first to answer a question? Well, that's a good way to gain some extra XPs ;-) But then again, on average it will do to just scan the new notes. Anyway, you'll just have about three minutes to be the first to answer a question.

On the other hand, it would be nice to rank posts by the amount of discussion they generate since this is not always reflected by the note's reputation. But well, that's only nice for those interested in group dynamics (as I am).

    Just my 2 cents, -gjb-

Maybe a quick hack in the New Nodes page to show the number of answers - MyNewQuestion (3 replies) - so any with a value of 0 can be quickly identified and leapt upon...:)

This is more or less all covered by grinder's Mozilla Sidebar status page - which shows the newest nodes with color coded dots for freshness of initial post and last comment, together with the total number of comments.

This is a work in progress, but already very useful.

As a side note, I don't consider the number of replies as the only criterium whether a question has sufficiently been answered. TIMTOWTDI, and you may always be able to add a new (or bizarre) touch. Sometimes the best solution is way down the thread, see Safe for SQL for an example.

    Hi, I second that.
It would be also nice to find the questions which may be asked earlier and have gone unanswered till today or have received x number of replies (x =1 or x = 2) which may not be very useful to auther.

    Aritst.

For instance, as of the time of this post, this node(Forkin around) has had no answers in going on 24 hours, and this one(Term::ReadLine) in over 48 hours.   (I'll take a stab at the first one if no one else does soon, but I don't know what to change/set for the second.)

Oh, and joe++++ for mentioning grinder's great sidebar gadget.   (I haven't looked at Newest Nodes since he put it up.)

Check out blakem's bivnn.cgi -- an alternate interface to newest nodes. I have written and been using my own similar script for a while now, and am going to publish it at some point, but work only trickles in slowly now that it's in a state of being useful enough even if it's not what I'd consider ready for public consumption.

    Makeshifts last the longest.
