in reply to Replies and previews.

There is an option that can be set in your user settings that will generate a /msg chatterbox message when someone replies directly to one of your posts (it does not generate a message if someone replies to a reply to your post).

Also, when only the submit button is present, that's an indication that when you submit it, you'll be able to edit it again. Simply scroll down, correct the text in question, and click submit. This will update the existing text, not add a new node.

I know about the chatterbox (which I have off anyway), but that's not what I'm looking for. I don't need a one-time instant message. I'd like to see an overview.

Yes, that would be a nice feature, it has been mentioned a few times. Have faith, it will get added in. There are new features almost every day...

I'm not sure what you mean by "one-time," as the chatterbox message remains until you clear it. Also, when people spot errors in your posts, they will often send a chatterbox /msg about it, so that you can fix it, so it might not be a good idea to have it off. Or, you could just grab the XML for your private messages...

The chatterbox (and all those other boxes) take up too much real estate. And they often need to be scrolled to anyways, so I've turned most boxes off.

As for sending private messages, that's why Ray Tomlinson gave us email. ;-). Repeatedly hitting reload to see if someone wants to point out an error seems a step back to me....
