Murcia has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I want to upgrade perl from 5.6.1 to 5.8.0 on Linux Suse 8.0. How to do it? I am running apache-server, mysql, oracle. Are there known problems? Thanks Murcia

I've tried this for SuSE 7.3 without success. Replacing distribution version of perl (5.6.1) with 5.8.0 broke some system services depending on it (eg. cups). So I switched back to 5.6.1 for system and install 5.8.0 to /opt/perl-5.8.0.

You can probably use 5.8.0, you just have to add the path to Suse's modules (typically in /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.6.1/) when you compile Perl.

Thanks, I tried once to compile without setting the path to modules. I become trouble with apache. My Cgi's did not work. "can not find module in @INC" ... At the End I reinstall perl 5.6.1 as rpm ... Murcia

You might want to check out the article in the January 2003 issue of The Perl Journal by Matthew O Persico about juggling different Perl versions, if you want to use the new features of 5.8.0 but are worried you might break some 5.6.1 stuff.

I know there have been problems obtaining a working version of the DBD::MySQL module for ActivePerl as there isn't an official ppm version available yet.

The ReadMe file for the version at CPAN gives a link to a ppm version someone has put together, but I was not able to install it correctly on Windows NT.

I'm not alone in this, see this node.

This might not affect Linux, or you might not be using ActivePerl, but you may need to be prepared to install manually if it does, and you are.
