One of the worst days for trying to get a seat in a restaurant. :-)

Valentine's Day is a another consumerist festival that takes an ancient fertility rite and transforms it into a shopping spree. Like Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Mother's Day, the dominant aspect is commerce. It's not what you do, it's what you buy. If you don't spring for a giant bouquet of flowers and/or a box of chocolates for your significant other (sent to their workplace so everyone can see), you just don't care. And if you really cared, you'd blow a month's salary on some sort of jewelry.

Sure, every year, there's a heartwarming story about the poor couple who gave each other some inexpensive but heartfelt gift because they didn't have any money, but they loved each other too much to let the day pass without some gesture. Thing is, the subtext there is that they only did that because they were broke. If you have money and try something like writing her a poem, well, you just don't care enough. I actually tried this once, and I never heard the end of it.

My plan for Valentine's Day is to not do anything. Tomorrow, I might see if I can buy myself some chocolate that's been marked down. But I'm single, so what do I know?

"What do I want? I'm an American. I want more."

But Valentine's day is good for laughing at people who don't know what their symbols really represent.

If you have ever seen a heart (human or animal, doesn't matter), you know darned well that a "heart-shape" isn't very heart shaped. But it does bear an amazing resemblance to a private piece of female anatomy. Care to guess what Cupid's "arrow" might have been originally?

Them durned pagans were a little direct, weren't they? :-)

I don't know about that , I've always found the heart shape as it is known to look similar to the adrenal gland but only in some pictures.
        I can't believe it's not psellchecked

The day in which red roses which where the same yesterday and will be the same tomorrow cost an order of magnitude more.

I bought some anyway, I'm a sucker for my woman.

    EVIL!

Today is a day designed to make those of us who are alone feel even more so. Today is a day that I felt horrible, but couldn't call the only friend I have because I didn't want to make her feel like I was trying to make her feel guilty that we aren't more. Today is a day that people literaly walked through what I was working on in order to give otehr people presents. Today is a terrible horrible abomination.

    Actually, it's Friday.
That's my feeling on the matter. But I'm definitely glad it's Friday.

Well, as I read this, it actually is into the 15th, so the answer "neither" would apply. Lots of interesting comments, to which I will add my own...

And as one person mentioned, it is all about commerce, no matter what they would have you think it means. It acts to isolate those already lonely, by making them feel a failure for being alone at the moment. In college, I had several friends who nicknamed the 14th as "the Dark holiday." Too many twiterpated people. *shutter* For me, though, it is a dark reminder as well.

14 Feb 2000-I went to work that day, but spent it worried about my paternal grandmother, who was in the hospital. When I got off work, I drove to the hospital, and spent the remainder of the evening there. I was standing at the foot of the hospital bed when she passed away twelve minutes after midnight, on the 15th, only a few days shy of she and my grandfather's 54th wedding anniversary.

I hope it was a good one for you all.

...a day that I should be spending with my girlfriend in Georgia. She and I really love each other, and the extra bonus is that there's no snow where she lives. Alas, I'm close to broke, and can't afford an airline ticket to go fly south to see her. It also sucks that there's another winter storm coming.

...the day after February 13, and the day after yesterday, and the day before tomorrow. It's also the same day as it was 365 days ago.

I finished my five day course of the Common Base of Knowledge for the CISSP certification. I also found out this afternoon that there is a very good chance that I will once again be be back in uniform, and this time, I probably will wind up somewhere not so nice.

Who was it who said "Once you have a woman's heart, you can never get rid of the rest of her"? I want to say it was John Gay in "The Beggar's Opera", but I don't think that's right.
