in reply to The Polls

While I agree with the lack of errm "interesting content" of the polls lately, maybe it would be enough to just include a "/msg gods with your suggestions" at the bottom of each poll. I don't think it would be good to choose another channel (E-Mail).

A while ago, in an unrelated thread, someone suggested a poll about countries of origin. What a pity that one wasn't picked up...

If you want a suggestion for a poll to be taken seriously, then you should go to the effort to actually write a poll. Exactly which countries did you want to list in the choices? Which entire-countries of individuals did you want to offend by not mentioning them? What rude class did you want to clump the unmentioned countries into, "Third-world", "Back-water", "Other"? (:

Please don't use just "/msg gods" to submit a poll suggestion, that won't work very well. If someone wants to provide an e-mail for recieving poll suggestions and wade through the e-mail that comes in and produce the occasional good, original, complete poll as output, then such an effort would certainly be appreciated.

Before suggesting a poll, please review past polls and poll ideas quest. If you particularly like something in poll ideas quest that doesn't appear in past polls, then "/msg gods" might be a good idea. If you do that work and come up with a particularly good poll not listed anywhere, then post it to poll ideas quest and "/msg gods".

If any other gods wish to manage an different method of collecting poll suggestions, that would be great as well. If someone wants to provide a low-maintenance way to get new polls posted w/o gods doing it by hand, that'd be nice too.

If you just want to complain without making any concrete, complete, constructive suggestions, then just reply in this thread and paraphrase "someone else should do a better job of this" and perhaps suggest a way someone else could spend a lot of time in order to make you happier. q-:

How about a link to the quest, along with these instructions, somewhere around the voting booth or past polls? That way people can easily find it.

Thanks for summing this up, tye. I wasn't aware of poll ideas quest and will definitely use it in future. In fact, I already submitted a poll idea: Where do the monks live?. I'll just wait for a while to allow for suggestions of more/different regions before /msg'ing gods.

Update: Forgot to mention this - I like the current poll. Thanks!

That would be the subject of another poll, of course.

I agree, lately the polls have been stupid. That's why I've gone ahead and removed the nodelet completely.

People are (thankfully) usually reluctant to just say "that sucks". So you can now downvote polls (or upvote, of course). This will provide feedback that should make the polls more likely to be of the type most appreciated by the voting monk population.

I have qualms about the XP implications. I don't want this to be considered a form of XP whoring for gods. I also don't want the fact that I choose (I think wisely) to not surf day-to-day as "root" (tye ) to be an issue (since voting on polls created by me as tye  won't affect tye's XP).

I could, after creating a poll, assign it to tye (gods can do that kind of thing). I'd rather not have the extra work and I could see doing that being taken different ways. I could also arrange for XP to not be given for authors of polls, but I could see that being taken different ways. I could even cause upvotes to not give XP to poll authors but downvotes to have the usual odds of taking XP from poll authors.

But I suspect that most polls will get more upvotes than downvotes (just like most nodes) and so I'm hoping I can get away with doing no more work. If gods take the time to create a good poll, they'll likely get an XP reward. I'll skip (or redirect) that XP reward because I'm both lazy and paranoid. The occasional hated poll will likely be infrequent and mild enough that the XP loss will not be an issue (and the net XP change I avoid/redirect will likely still be an XP gain so avoiding the XP loss shouldn't be an issue either).

But if someone feels strongly about any of these issues, please speak up.

Update: And if someone submits a very good poll suggestion, then I'll ask their permission to make the poll owned by them so they get the XP reward.
