Need for a dojo?

by kapper (Chaplain)
on Aug 29, 2000 at 14:41 UTC ( [id://30096]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

Since i first enlisted as an initiate in the Monastry, the rate of suddenly appearing flames have been steadily rising...

It's not that i do not sometimes enjoy a good religous war over something like object oriented versus functional programming, but the flame wars at the monastry seems to be of a much nastier personal charachter!

When i entered the monastry this morning and read Fame, Fortune, Pride, and Vanity it really saddened me.. is this what the monastry is becomming?

Probably not, but it is definetly becomming a part of the monastry wether we wan't it or not... fortunatly, it also seems that a lot of us are really here to learn, meditate and enjoy the company of kindred spirits from all over the world... this can especially be seen in the desperate replies found in such flame wars where people beg their fellow monks to quit the flaming and perhaps raise their tolerance levels for their fellow munks a bit!

The "calm down" and "let's talk perl instead" responses, does not, however, seem to have any effect at all on those who flame...

I propose that a new section is added to the Monastry... "the dojo", a place where people who must flame, can fight it out without bothering the rest of the monastry!

This will not stop people from posting flames in other categories, but it will at least give us a place to move their posts too, without being acused of cencur...

    The japanese term "dojo" literaly means 'A place of the way'. Such a place in our Monastery, would be a place to study and learn perl, not verbally fight each other.

    Why not call it "Boot Hill" or something? Anything but dojo.

    Maybe I'm too sensitive about this, but many people who practice Martial Arts have a special feeling for the dojo term.

    Have a look at this page on what a dojo is (or can be).

      you are right at that!!!
      my old ju-jutsu teacher would probably have given me the evil eye for my post =)
      yup... "Boot hill", "Pit of flames", "Gasoline storage - bring your matches" or ..? would be better!
        Well, imho 'dojo' means training room... as 'shiaijo' means competition/game room!

        I don't know if I would like 'dojo' to be used as a forum... or anything like that where people keep flaming each other...<br
        #!/jpsama/bin/perl -w
        $tks = `mount`;
        $jpsama = $! if $!;
        print $jpsama;

    This is not a good idea. People wanting to flame are cluthering our bandwith with idiotic and puberal things.

    My opinions may have changed,
    but not the fact that I am right

      I agree, but they are not going stop wether we wan't it or not, a "dojo" like place would make it a lot easier to ignore it...
        Would it remain there?

        Or would it spill over?

        Besides which my impression is that overall things are getting better, not worse. Some issues may be more public, but I think this is by and large getting resolved.

Hmmm

    Well, I'm responding primarily because I really like the word 'dojo' (even if it isn't appropriate for this proposal). Though, right now without any caffeine, I don't think I can come up with any good words to replace it.

    I'd also like to say that I'm not against the idea of a flame pit. However I would like to make the concession that one should not allow votes in said pit.

    Off to class,
    Gryn
