My First Perl Script

She saunters toward me.
Introductions are made.
She doesn't know me, nor I her.

Her beauty mesmerizes me, and I tremble.
She speaks, and I listen, fascinated.
I want to know her, I need to know her.

Heart in hand, I accost her.
I inquire knowing the consequences.
She replies, and I am content.

# Each stanza explained... # # 1. when i first began to learn perl ( she - Camel Book ) # 2. reading the camel book ( she - Perl Itself ) # 3. running my first script ( she - Perl Compiler )

Replies are listed 'Best First'.
A reply, but not abuse. I use the style of Doctor Seusse

    Whilst I wondering, worldly weary,
in my mind, didst steal this theorey:
If Perl, the language we love so dearly,
was a lass; would our work then be less dreary?

Thus provoked, sat I to weigh the evidence.
Called witnesses from my life's experience.
Much searching done, I cannot recommend
Perl as a lover to any friend.

For if you liken Perl to a female form,
You'll find her stats are not the norm.
    No, a Camel personifies Perl quite well;
    Except for the unpleasant smell

I know this loosely related, but Portuguese is my first language. Most programming languages are refered to as being masculine, as are books and compilers, so it struck me as a bit odd reading about the book, the language and the compiler as a she...

Then again, my father's main complaint about the portuguese language (he's american btw) is that many objects were attributed a gender that made very little sense. The example he always chose to give was 'the boat'.

In portuguese: 'o barco' is masculine. He always thought of boats as being very feminine, and I guess I have to agree with the both of you. Perl should also be regarded as a feminine.

Your so right in the way you discribe perl as a female. She (Perl) captures your mind and soul, you have no choice but to learn from her. And once she teaches you the basics then she has more in store for your entertainment.
